WILD-JETS

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) — Gabriel Vilardi scored twice and added an assist to lift the Winnipeg Jets to a 6-3 victory over Minnesota on Tuesday, ending the Wild’s six-game point streak. Kyle Connor had a goal and pair of assists, while Mason Appleton, Sean Monahan and Nino Niederreiter also scored for the Jets (34-15-5), who rebounded from a 6-3 Monday loss to the Calgary Flames — the most goals they’ve allowed this season. Adam Lowry and Dylan DeMelo each contributed a pair of assists. Laurent Brossoit made 36 saves for Winnipeg in his 14th game of the season. Marco Rossi scored twice and Kirill Kaprizov notched a goal and assist for the Wild (26-24-6), who set a franchise record for goals in a 10-7 home win Monday against the Vancouver Canucks, including a franchise-best seven goals in the third period. Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 24 of the 29 shots he faced for Minnesota, which is 5-1-1 in its last seven games. The Wild play Friday in Edmonton against the Oilers.

MSU BASEBALL

DENVER, Colo. (MSU) – Minot State received contributions from every part of their lineup as all nine starters reached base safely, but the Beavers fell to the Regis Rangers 18-8 Monday in the finale of their 4-game, non-conference series. Senior Tim Carlson (0-1) came out of the bullpen for Minot State (1-3 overall) and took the loss. Senior Noah Balandran was a bright spot for the Beavers, coming out of the bullpen as well and throwing one scoreless inning, allowing no hits, with no walks and one strikeout. Junior Miles Iverson led the way offensively for the Beavers, going 1-for-2 in the ballgame with a home run, a walk and an RBI. Sophomore Colton Bagshaw put together a noteworthy effort as well, going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Junior Javier Gutierrez also helped out, going 2-for-3 for Minot State with a walk and two RBI. The Beavers got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with two runs in the top of the first inning. Minot State scored twice on a two-run double off the bat of Bagshaw. The Beavers then lost some of their lead, but expanded on their advantage in the third inning after the Rangers cut it to 2-1. Minot State brought home a pair, with one run driven in by Gutierrez’s single, which brought the Beavers lead to 4-1. Regis came back to even the ballgame at four before Minot State reclaimed a 7-4 advantage in the fourth inning. Minot State lost the lead they built in the fourth, but got back on the scoreboard in the eighth trailing 18-7. The Beavers drove home a run on Iverson’s leadoff dinger off freshman Frankie Tarantino, tightening the Regis lead to 18-8. The Beavers were unable to get any closer as neither team scored again in the ballgame.

UND MENS BASKETBALL-HONOR

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (UND) – North Dakota sophomore guard Treysen Eaglestaff won Summit League Peak Performer of the Week for the week of February 12-18, announced by the conference office Monday afternoon. It is his third honor of the season and of his career—he is second only to Denver’s Tommy Bruner in Peak Performer of the Week awards this season. Eaglestaff scored a career-high 33 points in the win over Denver on Thursday night, with 27 points coming in the second half. He scored 17 points, which was second on the team in the win over Oral Roberts on Saturday. With 25 points per game, 15-16 shooting from the foul line and 56% shooting from the floor, Eaglestaff paced the green and white to two double digit road wins. Additionally, against Oral Roberts, three of the four rebounds he grabbed were offensive boards and from beyond the arc he shot 5-12 during the two games.

MSU BASEBALL

DENVER, Colo. (MSU) – Seniors Mark Ossanna and Ricky Apodaca each collected four hits to help propel the Minot State Beavers over the Regis Rangers 20-5 on Sunday in non-conference action. Senior Cameron Bagshaw (1-0) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Minot State (1-2 overall). The right-hander went 1.1 shutout innings without giving up a hit. Junior Gage Eastlick also made an impact on the mound for the Beavers, throwing two shutout innings while allowing three hits, with no walks and one strikeout. In addition to his four hits, Apodaca had a double and three RBI to lead the Beavers. Ossanna added three doubles and an RBI to his four-hit performance as well. Junior Gunnar Kozlowitz also chipped in for Minot State, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate while adding a double, a walk and four RBI. The Beavers scored in seven different innings on the way to victory. Minot State took the lead for good at 1-0 in the first inning The big hits for the Beavers in the inning were a two-run double off the bat of Kozlowitz and a two-run single from Apodaca.

MSU MENS WRESTLING

MOORHEAD, Minn. (MSU) – Brendan Barnes and Cayden White led the way as each picked up wins by pin for the Beavers as the Minot State’s men’s wrestling team closed the regular season with a dominating 37-8 victory at Minnesota State Moorhead on Sunday. Barnes won his 165-pound match by pin 48 seconds into the third round over Jacob Reinardy, while White won in a quick 1 minute, 36 seconds in his 184-pound match with Anthony Sykora. Those were the two pins on the day for the Beavers (10-7 overall, 5-4 NSIC) who racked up victories in eight of the days’ 10 matches. Kelby Armstrong (157) and Cannon Potts (197) added wins by technical fall, with Armstrong scoring a 15-0 win and Potts a 19-1 victory, while Logen Fischer (125), Wayne Joint (133), and Jake Swirple (285) won by major decision. Fischer picked up a 15-6 victory, Joint won his match 15-2, and Swirple rolled to a 10-2 win. Ryan Hrcka (149) added the other victory for Minot State on the day, an 8-7 decision over Gunnar Mogen, as Minot State won its fourth straight dual and its second in a row and all-time over MSU Moorhead. Next up, Minot State will host the NCAA Super Region V tournament on Saturday, March 2, at the North Dakota State Fairgrounds.

MINOT, ND – The Minot Minotauros swept their two-games in St. Cloud this weekend with a 5-2 win on Saturday. Ian Spencer and Will Dawson gave the Tauros a 2-0 lead after the first period. Trevor Stachowiak scored in the second as Minot led 3-1 after two. Colby Bear and John Small tallied goals in the final period and Lukas Swedin made 27 saves fot the Tauros. Minot’s lead over Bismarck in the NAHL Central Division remains six points as the Bobcats scored a shootout win over Aberdeen on Saturday.

UND HOCKEY

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (UND) – Colorado College goaltender Kaidan Mbereko made 43 saves while the Tigers struck for a trio of goals in the third period to complete the weekend sweep over No. 2 North Dakota, 6-2, on Saturday night from Ed Robson Arena in Colorado Springs, Colo. Mbereko was the star of the show between the pipes for the Tigers (18-9-1, 12-6-0 NCHC) with a career-high 43 saves while Gleb Veremyev scored two goals in a minute span in the third period to give CC its first four-game winning streak over North Dakota (20-8-2, 11-6-1 NCHC) since 1974-75. UND dominated the opening 40 minutes of the game, holding a 36-17 shot advantage after two periods, but Mbereko kept the game deadlocked at 2-2 heading into the final 20. There, the Tigers struck for three goals in the opening 10+ minutes of the frame to build the advantage. Abram Wiebe (1) and Cameron Berg (16) each struck for North Dakota in the loss, as the Fighting Hawks earned no points in the NCHC standings for the first time all season and will head into the final six games of the season with a one-point lead over St. Cloud State for first place in the league standings. North Dakota put together an all-out offensive attack in the opening 20 minutes, nearly matching last night’s game total of 24 shots with 21 to build a 2-1 lead after one. Wiebe opened the scoring just under six minutes into the contest, wiring home his first-career goal off a slick feed from Jayden Perron on a 3-on-2 rush to give the Fighting Hawks the 1-0 lead; however, that advantage lasted only 14 seconds as Jack Millar knotted the game at 1-1 with a shot through traffic from the point. Special teams took over in the closing minutes of the first period, as CC’s Noah Laba was assessed a major penalty for boarding and the Hawks took advantage when Berg snapped his 16th goal of the season past the goaltender with just nine seconds remaining in the opening period to take a 2-1 lead into the locker room. UND continued to dominate the puck in the middle stanza, but could not beat Mbereko on any of the 15 shots fired his way. The Tigers eventually tied the game at 2-2 late in the period as Evan Werner had a puck deflect off his skate and into the net to even the score after 40 minutes. With the game even at 2-2, it was Colorado College who took control in the final 20 minutes with a trio of goals in the opening 11 minutes of the period to turn the contest around and take a 5-2 lead. Noah Laba added the final dagger into the empty net to close out the 6-2 victory and series sweep. North Dakota will return home for the first time in a month to battle Minnesota Duluth for a weekend series beginning on Friday night at 7:07 p.m. from Ralph Engelstad Arena.

UND MENS BASKETBALL

TULSA, Okla. (UND) – The North Dakota men’s basketball team got a balanced effort Saturday night with 20 points from B.J. Omot, 17 from Treysen Eaglestaff, 13 from Tyree Ihenacho and 11 from Eli King to defeat Oral Roberts 78-65 on Saturday night at Mabee Arena. It is the second time that the Fighting Hawks have gotten consecutive wins against the Golden Eagles (2/6/20 and 1/8/21) and first time that NoDak has gotten a season sweep. Amar Kuljuhovic led UND with 13 rebounds, while Ihenacho and Kuljuhovic tied with three assists. Ihenacho blocked four shots to set a new career high, and Eli King grabbed a team high four steals. Eaglestaff got the scoring started for UND with two layups, and from there the Fighting Hawks never looked back. ORU chipped away to make it a six-point game at 24-18 with just under nine minutes to go in the first half, but from there the green and white went on a 10-0 run to expand the lead to 16 points. Ihenacho drained a three, Eaglestaff hit three from the line and Eaglestaff and Kuljuhovic hit baskets to grab what would be the biggest lead of the game to that point. UND saw out the rest of the first half and took a 43-28 lead into intermission. In the second half NoDak would lead by as many as 19, which came following a layup by Eaglestaff with 15:56 remaining. Later in the half the Golden Eagles pulled within five at 55-50 as Isaac McBride completed a three-point play. But UND answered with six straight points from Omot and kept ORU at bay. With 1:59 to go it was an eight-point game at 67-59, but the Fighting Hawks closed the game on an 11-6 run to seal the victory. The Fighting Hawks will be back in action next Saturday in Fargo against North Dakota State at 1 p.m.

UND WOMENS BASKETBALL

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (UND) – The North Dakota women’s basketball team fell on Senior Day, 102-57, to Oral Roberts Saturday in the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center. The Fighting Hawks struggled with the Oral Roberts full court pressure to begin the game, turning the ball over on their first three possessions as ORU took an early 7-2 lead. After a UND timeout, the Hawks began to settle in and would eventually tie the game at 12-12 with 3:48 left in the first. The Golden Eagles closed the period on an 8-1 run and would carry their momentum into the second quarter where they scored 14 points to grab a 35-13 lead. UND would score nine points in the final four a half minutes of the second quarter, but ORU would match with 10 of its own to bring a 45-22 advantage into the halftime break. Sammiyah Hoskin paced UND in the first half with eight points and two rebounds, while Kacie Borowicz and Kiyah Hurst had four each. Oral Roberts turned the Hawks over 18 times in the opening 20, which turned into 22 points off turnovers. Oral Roberts extended its lead to as many as 40 in the third quarter on 14-of-24 shooting with four three-pointers. The Hawks connected on 10-of-13 attempts from the free throw line in the frame but struggled from the field with three field goals and trailed 78-38 heading into the fourth quarter. The Hawks best scoring quarter was in the fourth with 19 points, led by Hurst’s nine and Jayla Owen’s five. ORU’s offensive output continued, however, as they cruised to its 102-57 win. Hurst totaled a team-high 15 points with five rebounds and was followed by Hoskin and Kiera Pemberton who each had 10. Pemberton notched her second double-double of the season with 11 boards. The Fighting Hawks will have a week off before traveling to Fargo for a rematch with North Dakota State on Saturday.

NDSU MENS BASKETBALL

DENVER, Colo. (NDSU) – Denver’s Tommy Bruner scored 41 points to lead the Pioneers to a 77-71 comeback victory over the North Dakota State men’s basketball team on Saturday afternoon at Hamilton Gymnasium. Denver erased a 20-point deficit with 16 minutes remaining to earn the win. The Bison fell to 6-6 in Summit League play, while Denver improved to 6-7 in the league. Sophomore Tajavis Miller led NDSU with 21 points, including a 5-for-5 start from three-point range in the game. Junior Jacari White finished with 13 points, a career-high eight rebounds, and five assists. Denver shot 62 percent after halftime and made 6-of-11 from beyond the arc in the second half. NDSU led 52-32 with 16:09 remaining before the Pioneers exploded for a 35-9 run over the next 11-plus minutes. Bruner is the nation’s leading scorer at 25.3 points per game. NDSU returns home to host St. Thomas on Thursday, Feb. 22, and North Dakota on Saturday, Feb. 24, next week.

NDSU WOMENS BASKETBALL

FARGO, N.D. (NDSU) – The North Dakota State women’s basketball team extended its season-best win streak to five games after downing Denver, 86-65, on Saturday afternoon at Scheels Center in front of 1,255 fans. Elle Evans led the way for NDSU (16-9, 10-2 Summit) logging her sixth 20-point game of the season with 20 points on 8-of-15 shooting from the field. She also grabbed seven rebounds with one steal and one assist. Heaven Hamling added in 11 points with a team-best eight rebounds and five assists. The Grand Rapids, Minn., native moved into the top five on the NDSU all-time scoring list passing Darci Steere (1990-94) for fifth place with 1,589 points as a Bison. As a team, NDSU shot 59.6 percent (34-57) from the field, including 75.0 percent (9-12) in the second quarter. The Bison also netted 46 points in the paint and the bench added in 30 points. Miriley Simon registered 11 points and Avery Koenen also reached double figures in scoring off the bench with 10 points. After building up a 20-16 advantage in the first quarter, the Bison erupted outscoring the Pioneers (7-19, 4-9 Summit), 23-9, in the second frame. NDSU stole momentum with a 12-0 run capped off by a triple from Simon with 4:48 to play in the half. (AP) — Dylan Cozens tied it with 37 seconds left with goalie Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen off for an extra attacker and Henri Jokiharju scored 1:29 into overtime to give the Buffalo Sabres a 3-2 victory over the Minnesota Wild on Saturday. Luukkonen made 31 saves to help Buffalo win for the second time in five games since the All-Star break. Casey Mittelstadt also scored. Joel Eriksson Ek and Declan Chisholm scored for Minnesota, and Filip Gustavsson made 25 saves. The Wild had won four straight. The Wild host Vancouver on Monday afternoon.

Winczewski is one of eight finalist for the award in boys basketball. The winner will be announced at the 2024 National High School Coaches Association National Coaches Convention which will be held June 22 – 27 in Bismarck.

MINOTAUROS

MINOT, ND – The Minot Minotauros survived a penalty filled contest to defeat the Norsemen 5-1 in St. Cloud on Friday. The teams combined for 15 penalties totaling 60 minutes in the box. The Tauros tallied seven for 33 minutes, while St. Cloud was whistled for eight totaling 27 minutes. Adam Mahler put the Tauros up 1-0 in the first. Nicklas Ketonen and Joel Lehtinen lit the lamp in the second to give Minot a 3-0 lead through two periods. Ian Spencer scored in the third to make it 4-0 before St. Cloud responded with a tally by Lucca Munoz. Jack O’Hanisain would find the back of the net with less than 2 minutes to play. Brady James made 27 saves on 28 shots from the Norsemen. The Tauros remain six points ahead of Bismarck in the NAHL Central Division standings as the Bobcats trounced Aberdeen 7-4.

MSU BASEBALL

DENVER, Colo. (MSU) – Senior Ricky Apodaca went 2-for-4 with a double, but the Minot State Beavers still came up short on Friday in their non-conference season opener and suffered defeat at the hands of the Regis Rangers by a final of 5-3. Senior Craig Schmich (0-1) got the ball to start for Minot State (0-1 overall) and took the loss. Offensively, the Beavers were led by Apodaca, who went 2-for-4 on the day with a double. Sophomore Colton Bagshaw furnished a standout day at the plate as well, going 1-for-4 with a double. Senior Cameron Carr also helped out for Minot State, putting together one hit in four trips to the plate while adding an RBI. The Beavers got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the top of the first inning. Minot State got an RBI single from Carr, scoring Apodaca from second base. The Rangers then rallied to score two runs and take a 2-1 lead before the Beavers got back on the board in the fourth. Junior Javier Gutierrez came across to score the lone run of the inning for Minot State, which evened the score at 2-2. Regis broke that tie and grabbed a 5-2 lead moving into the ninth, when Minot State narrowed the gap to 5-3. The ballgame ended with that ninth-inning rally falling short. The teams will play a doubleheader today.

MSU MENS BASKETBALL

MINOT, N.D. (MSU) – The 23rd-ranked Minot State men’s basketball team got a 31-point showing from the bench but fell 94-90 to the 17th-ranked Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs at home Friday in an NSIC battle. The Beavers (18-7 overall, 13-6 NSIC) had four players score in double figures, led by Ben Bohl, who had 24 points. Kameron Givens added 17 points and two steals from the bench and Connor Hollenbeck chipped in as well with 14 points. Led by Michael Jok’s three offensive rebounds, Minot State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 10 boards that resulted in 18 second-chance points. After falling behind 21-18, Minot State went on a 9-0 run with 12:42 left in the first half to take a 27-21 lead. The Beavers then added four points to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 55-45 advantage. Minot State did most of its first half damage in the paint, scoring 30 of its 55 points close to the basket. Minnesota Duluth proceeded to take a 79-73 lead before Minot State went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Hollenbeck’s three, to shrink the deficit to 79-78 with 6:14 to go in the contest. Minnesota Duluth responded and outscored the Beavers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 94-90. Minot State got out on the break in the period, scoring seven fast-break points. Minot State will try to bounce back today as they host Concordia-St. Paul at 5:30 pm.

MSU WOMENS BASKETBALL

MINOT, N.D. (MSU) – The Minot State women’s basketball team fought back from a 10-point deficit at 42-32 with 5:30 remaining in the third quarter to knock off the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs 66-54 at home Friday in NSIC action. The Beavers (9-19 overall, 6-13 NSIC) had three players score in double figures, led by Lorelei McIver, who had 21 points and eight rebounds. Maya Aguilar tacked on 10 points and two steals off of the bench and Jaime Skeggs helped out with 10 points. Minot State pulled down 31 rebounds in Friday’s game compared to Minnesota Duluth’s 24, led by McIver’s eight boards. Minot State forced 13 Minnesota Duluth turnovers while committing 11 themselves in Friday’s game. The Beavers turned those takeaways into 14 points on the other end of the floor. Aguilar’s two steals led the way for Minot State. Minot State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 19-8 at the end of the first quarter. The Beavers fought back in the second period, narrowing the deficit to 29-22 by the time halftime rolled around. Minnesota Duluth continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 42-29 advantage before Minot State went on a 17-0 run, punctuated by a three from Aguilar, to grab a 46-42 lead with one second to go in the third. Minot State took advantage of four Minnesota Duluth turnovers in the quarter, scoring 10 points off of takeaways. Minot State kept widening that lead, expanding it to 58-52 before going on a 6-0 run to grow the lead to 64-52 with 58 seconds to go in the contest. The Beavers held onto that lead for the rest of the game for the 66-54 win. Minot State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 10 of its 20 points in the paint. The Beavers host Concordia-St. Paul today at 3:30 pm at the Dome.

MSU MENS HOCKEY

MINOT, N.D. (MSU) – Even with tonight’s game being given the title of “exhibition,” it was a unique situation that the Minot State men’s hockey team faced and handled on their own terms. The BCIHL’s Simon Fraser Red Leafs club team came to town to kickstart a weekend series in the Magic City. No. 1 Minot State (26-6-1) played to their style with strong efforts in route to a 5-2 win over Simon Fraser (4-11-1). Some of those efforts included fantastic individual plays from some of the top guns on the squad. Things got started when the Beavers opened with the ice breaker at 16:12 of the first period. Nearly six minutes later, Simon Fraser answered with a strong push of their own. The first would not end like that however, as the Beavers would pick up a huge confidence booster with a goal to make it 2-1 with 50 seconds to go. Minot State would add two in the second period, nearly three minutes apart at 14:44 and 11:43. A tall hill to climb for Simon Fraser got even bigger when the Beavers grabbed a big insurance goal less than two minutes into the third period. The Red Leafs would cap off the scoring with 30 seconds left in regulation, but it was already too little too late as the game ended 5-2. Three players made up for all five goals on the night, as Christian Kadolph and Reid Arnold scored twice in the win. Joey Moffatt drove hard to the net just enough for the puck to cross the line, as he joined Kadolph and Arnold as the other goal scorer. Jake Anthony did enough to fulfill his starting role in the net, making over 10 saves on the evening. Minot State wins the first of two exhibition matches versus the Simon Fraser Red Leafs. It will not count towards the all-time series, but it could potentially set up a much more intense battle heading into tomorrow when both teams wrap up the weekend set. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. (CT) at Maysa Arena. Fans can also capitalize on free admission for the whole day, including women’s hockey versus Jamestown beforehand.

MSU WOMENS HOCKEY

MINOT, N.D. (MSU) – Even giving up the first goal, it meant nothing to the Minot State women’s hockey team. The Beavers were back on the first night of a back-to-back with the Jamestown Jimmies, as each gear towards the end of the regular season. Minot State (19-10-1) took care of business with a 4-1 win over Jamestown (13-15-0) on Friday afternoon at Maysa Arena. While the Jimmies picked up the first goal of the game, it was the Beavers who rattled off four straight to come away with the victory. After Jamestown tallied at 9:19 of the first, the Beavers responded moments after. In fact, 18 seconds following the Jimmies goal. As the game remained tied at one heading into the middle frame, the next score would not come until 14:35 of the second as Minot State took on their first lead of the game. Two early markers in the third period, both at 1:11 and 4:15 would settle it for the Beavers. Scoring first for the Beavers was Olivia Opheim as she racked up her sixth of the year. Mia McKee with blazing speed down the right-wing side put up a nice wrister glove side for her fifth. She would then score again for her second of the game and sixth overall. Cameron Schmidt got on the board with her sixth as she scored in between both of McKee’s two goals. Aspen Cooper was a big help on the back end after she dished out two assists. An early shot from the blue line that took a wild redirect did not deter the performance of Morgan Baker, who stepped in again as the starting netminder. She grabbed 24 saves on 25 shots. Count win number seven on the season for Minot State over Jamestown and 16th in the all-time series. Both teams will meet again tomorrow for a 3:45 p.m. (CT) puck drop. It is another day of free admission for the fans, but more importantly a day to recognize the six Seniors from women’s hockey. The Beavers will honor Riley Ball, Gillian Gervin, Gracie Perry, Anna German, Aspen Cooper, and Haylie Biever for their time and dedication to the program.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (UND) – No. 2 North Dakota dropped a 7-1 decision to No. 15/16 Colorado College on Friday night from Ed Robson Arena in Colorado Springs, Colo. UND (20-7-2, 11-5-1 NCHC) becomes the final team in the nation to suffer a regulation loss during league play and sees its school record 21-game regulation unbeaten streak come to an end – the first since Nov. 3 at Boston University. Colorado College (17-9-1, 11-6-0 NCHC) scored three times in the second period to turn a 2-1 game into a 5-1 contest while forward Zaccharya Wisdom tied the NCHC record with four goals to hand the Tigers their first three-game winning streak over North Dakota since 1995. Riese Gaber scored the lone tally for the Fighting Hawks in the loss, knotting the game at 1-1 with his 15th goal of the season and seventh with the man advantage midway through the first period, but CC responded with a tally in the final two minutes of the opening frame to take a 2-1 lead into the intermission. The Tigers took control over the final six minutes of the middle stanza, striking for a trio of goals in a 2:48 span to grab a 5-1 lead after 40 minutes. CC added two more goals, both coming from Wisdom, in the final 20 minutes to seal the 7-1 victory and claim the season series over NoDak. North Dakota will look to salvage a series split on Saturday night at 7:08 p.m. (CT).

NDSU WOMENS BASKETBALL

FARGO, N.D. (NDSU) – The North Dakota State women’s basketball team picked up its fourth straight win after downing Oral Roberts, 83-73, on Thursday night at Scheels Center. Heaven Hamling led the way for the Bison (15-9, 9-2 Summit) with her fourth 20-point game of the season with a team-high 21 points on 5-of-7 shooting from three. The Grand Rapids, Minn., native also hauled in six rebounds with five assists and two steals. Elle Evans contributed 12 points with five rebounds, while Abby Schulte also tallied 12 points with five rebounds. Avery Koenen rounded out the group grabbing a game-high 10 rebounds with eight points. As a team, NDSU shot 53.6 percent (30-56) from the field and 47.9 percent (9-19) from three. NDSU also grabbed 43 rebounds with eight different players contributing at least one. After committing 13 first half turnovers and trailing at the break, 41-36, NDSU responded in the third quarter shooting a game-best 63.2 percent from the field. The Bison were able to construct an 8-2 run to open up six-point edge, 56-50, after Abby Graham drained a triple at the 3:41 mark. NDSU carried the energy into the fourth frame with five straight points to extend the lead to 76-62 after Koenen connected on a jumper with 4:25 remaining. The Bison went on to hold off the Golden Eagles (16-9, 7-5 Summit) the rest of the way to earn the 83-73 win. NDSU will be back in action hosting Denver on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m.

NDSU MENS BASKETBALL

TULSA, Okla. (NDSU) – Andrew Morgan and Tajavis Miller both scored 18 points to lead the North Dakota State men’s basketball team to a 73-60 win at Oral Roberts on Thursday evening. NDSU improved to 6-5 in Summit League play, and ORU dropped to 5-7 in the league standings. The Bison led for more than 27 minutes of the contest. With the score knotted at 28-28 just under four minutes before halftime, Jacari White hit a three, and Miller scored a pair of buckets to put NDSU up by seven. The Bison were up 38-30 at halftime and maintained a lead for the entire second half. ORU pulled within five points at 63-58 with 4:50 left, but White scored on the next possession and the Bison strung together nine straight stops at the defensive end to win the game. NDSU closed on a 10-2 run. NDSU, ranked 11th in the nation for three-point shooting, connected on 9-of-23 (39 percent) from beyond the arc in the game. Boden Skunberg had 14 points and six rebounds for NDSU, White added 13 points, and Noah Feddersen pulled down a season-high 10 boards. In holding ORU to 60 points, NDSU matched its season-low for a D-I opponent. The Golden Eagles shot 35 percent for the game. The Bison will play at Denver on Saturday, with tip scheduled for 3 p.m. CT / 2 p.m. MT.

UND WOMENS BASKETBALL

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (UND) – Kiyah Hurst and Kacie Borowicz combined for 51 points as they powered the North Dakota women’s basketball team to a 75-65 win over Denver Thursday night in the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center. Hurst nearly matched a career-high as she poured in 27 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. After playing just eight minutes in the first half due to foul trouble, Hurst erupted for 22 of UND’s 41 second half points. She was an efficient 10-of-15 from the field with three treys. Borowicz added 24 points, six boards and dished out four assists. The Fighting Hawks defense led the way in the opening 10 minutes, holding Denver to 2-of-15 shooting to build up a 21-9 advantage. Hurst was on her way to a double-double early, scoring five points and grabbing six boards in the first. After Denver took an early 3-2 advantage, the Hawks rattled off a 12-1 run with points from four different UND players. UND shot 7-of-16 from the field and totaled 10 points in the paint. Hurst opened the second half in a flurry, knocking down a three-pointer that snowballed into 14 third quarter points. She scored 11 of the first 13 points in the half, with three treys, as the Hawks would build up their largest lead of the contest so far, 47-31. Over a four-minute span in the middle of the period, UND rolled off a 12-0 run to go up 21 points and would take a 54-35 lead into the fourth after trading baskets over the final two minutes. Denver cut the Fighting Hawk lead to single-digits multiple times in the final quarter, but the Hawks would hold off the Pioneers to earn the 75-65 lead. The Pioneers full-court pressure forced UND into eight turnovers in the fourth, leading to 16 DU points, but when the Hawks would break the press, they were nearly perfect from the floor going 8-for-9. Denver doubled its three-point total in the fourth, knocking down four treys on its way a 30-point output, but UND answered with 21 points to close out the 10-point win. UND and Denver shot an identical 6-of-17 from the floor in the second quarter, with the Pioneers outscoring the Hawks by one point. Borowicz scored eight of UND’s 13 in the period, including six of the last eight as they carried a 34-23 lead into halftime. She paced UND and was the first player in double-figures with 11 points in the opening 20, while Rakiyah Beal dished out four assists. The Fighting Hawks return to the Betty for the final time this season on Saturday for a Senior Day matchup with Oral Roberts.

UND MENS BASKETBALL

DENVER (UND) – Treysen Eaglestaff scored a career high 33 points to lead North Dakota men’s basketball team to a 92-78 win over the Denver Pioneers Thursday night, with 27 of his points coming the second half. The Fighting Hawk sharpshooter made 5-8 shots from downtown and 10-11 shots from the foul line. Eli King also set a career high with 18 points, including a team high 16 in the first half. Amar Kuljuhovic notched his seventh double-double of the season with ten points and a team high 14 rebounds. Tyree Ihenacho led the team with four assists, while King and Tsotne Tsartsidze each had three. B.J. Omot blocked three shots, while King blocked six and Ihenacho one. In stark contrast to the first half against Kansas City, both teams lit up the scoreboard in the first stanza. UND grabbed its first lead at 6-5 when Omot drove from the free throw line in for a dunk, the first of two monstrous dunks from the sophomore in the half. Later in the half, King drove the baseline and found Omot coming down the lane for a slam. King hit four three pointers in the half, setting a new career high for threes in a game in the first 20 minutes. Brady Danielson made a fantastic save on a loose ball which made its way to King, who hit from the top of the arc. His fourth three beat the buzzer as UND ran an inbounds play with 1.4 seconds left and King it from the corner to give the Fighting Hawks a 41-37 lead going into halftime. The game remained neck-and-neck during the opening minutes of the second half, with UND holding the lead until a three made it a 54-52 game in favor of the hosts with 11:57 to go. A couple of minutes later a layup from Kuljuhovic gave the lead back to the green and white at 57-56. Shortly after a three from Eaglestaff made it 60-58 for NoDak, who would never trail again in the game. Later from a 66-66 tie, Eaglestaff hit from beyond the arc again and from there the Fighting Hawks led the rest of the way. The Fighting Hawks will seek a season sweep of Oral Roberts on Saturday night at the Mabee Center.

UND HOCKEY-ONE MORE SHIFT

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (UND) – Former University of North Dakota standout and 2007 Hobey Baker Award winner Ryan Duncan will skate “One More Shift” with the current UND men’s hockey team on Saturday, Feb. 24 against Minnesota Duluth at Ralph Engelstad Arena. Duncan will be the seventh former North Dakota player to participate in the special recognition that started in 2018-19, joining Jim Archibald, Brandon Bochenski, Dave Christian, Ed Belfour, Matt Greene and Tony Hrkac. The former Fighting Sioux was one of the best players to don the green and white, helping his teams reach three NCAA Frozen Fours, capture one WCHA regular season and one WCHA Final Five title from 2005-09. Duncan finished with 172 points and 85 career goals to sit tied for 13th and ninth all-time in the program’s record books, respectively, while playing in a school record 175 games. Duncan became the second NoDak player to ever win the Hobey Baker Award as the nation’s top player in 2007 after scoring 31 goals and adding 26 assists for a whopping 57 points in 43 games. He was named the WCHA’s Player of the Year as well as earning All-America honors. Following his graduation in 2009, the Calgary, Alberta, native enjoyed a decade-long professional career that spanned over 540 games across North America and Europe. Duncan will take the ice following the starting lineups on Saturday night against Minnesota Duluth. Puck drop is set for 6:07 p.m. (CT) from Ralph Engelstad Arena.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Anthony Edwards scored 34 points and the Minnesota Timberwolves built a 30-point lead after the most lopsided first quarter in the NBA this season, handing the Portland Trail Blazers a sixth straight loss with a 128-91 rout on Thursday night. Karl-Anthony Towns added 23 points for the Western Conference-leading Timberwolves, who led 44-14 after one quarter in their fourth straight win. It was Minnesota’s West-leading 20th win on the road. Rudy Gobert added 11 points and 12 rebounds. Jerami Grant had 20 points for the Trail Blazers, who closed the gap to single digits in the third quarter. But the Timberwolves pushed the lead to 112-81 midway through the final period on Monte Morris’ jumper. The teams also met Tuesday night, with Minnesota pulling away in the fourth quarter for a 121-109 victory. The game wrapped up a five-game road trip for the Timberwolves heading into the All-Star break. Next week Minnesota starts a seven-game homestand. The Timberwolves host the Milwaukee Bucks on Feb. 23.

MSU MENS BASKETBALL-POLLS

MINOT, N.D. (MSU) – The Minot State men’s basketball slipped eight spots in the latest NABC Top 25 poll released today, checking in at No. 23 after a pair of setbacks last week. The Beavers (18-6 overall, 13-5 NSIC) lost on a last-second shot at No. 9 Minnesota State Moorhead on Thursday, then fell to a late comeback by St. Cloud State on Sunday at home. Despite the two setbacks, the Beavers remained ranked nationally for the fifth straight week, sliding from No. 15 a week ago to the No. 23 spot with 46 points. Minot State is one of four teams from the NSIC ranked in the latest Top 25 as they join No. 5 Minnesota State, Mankato, No. 8 MSU Moorhead, and No. 17 Minnesota Duluth in this week’s national poll. Minot State will battle the 17th-ranked Bulldogs at the MSU Dome on Friday night at 7:30 p.m., part of a men’s and women’s doubleheader that starts at 5:30 p.m.

MSU MENS HOCKEY-SOAR RETURNS

MINOT, N.D. (MSU) – The Minot State men’s hockey team is adding some additional punch on the defensive end with the addition of a familiar face on the Beaver blue line. Head coach Wyatt Waselenchuk is pleased to announce that former Minot State defenseman Eric Soar has rejoined the team for the remainder of the 2023-24 season. “We are super excited to have Eric rejoin our program,” Waselenchuk said. “Our staff has always kept it in the back of our minds that he’s still enrolled at MSU and obtaining his master’s degree. After an incredibly unfortunate past month or so for us in terms of injuries, and with this last weekend’s performance as a team, we knew we needed to address our back-end for the remainder of the season.”

Soar played in 139 games over four seasons for the Beavers and helped anchor Minot State’s defense as the team marched through the 2023 ACHA National Tournament to claim the program’s third national title. Soar finished his first four years with the Beavers with 15 career goals, which included three game-winners, and 66 career assists, including one at last year’s national tournament. Soar will be back in uniform for the Beavers (26-6-1 overall) when they host Simon Fraser in a pair of exhibition games at the Maysa Arena this weekend.

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Joel Eriksson Ek and Matt Boldy each had a goal and an assist, Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 25 shots and the Minnesota Wild beat the Arizona Coyotes 3-1 on Wednesday night. Jonas Brodin also scored for the Wild, who have won four in a row and seven of nine. Fleury got his 554th career win. Kirill Kaprizov had an assist, and the Wild’s top line of Eriksson El, Boldy and Kaprizov have seven goals and 10 assists in the last three games. Arizona has lost seven straight. The Wild killed all three Coyotes’ power play opportunities and have killed 29 of 32 penalties in the last nine games. The Wild host Buffalo on Saturday.

MSU SOFTBALL

JAMESTOWN, N.D. (MSU) -Abby Lohse led the offense with her second home run of the season but it wasn’t enough as the Beavers fell twice to in-state rival Jamestown in a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday on the road. Minot State fell 4-2 in the opener and 2-1 in the nightcap as the teams wrapped up a four-game season series, splitting a pair of close doubleheaders with the home team winning each contest. The Beavers are back in action next weekend as they head to Kansas for the Washburn Invitational.

GAME 1 | Jamestown 4, Minot State 2

Abby Lohse went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI, but the Minot State Beavers still came up short and lost to the Jamestown Jimmies by a final of 4-2. Calley Olson (1-1) started and took the loss in the circle for Minot State. Reegan Floyd was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going 2.1 shutout innings while allowing one hit. Lohse led the way offensively for the Beavers, going 2-for-4 in the ballgame with a home run and two RBI. Sara Van Wickler put together a standout day at the plate as well, going 2-for-4 with a double. The Beavers got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the top of the first inning. Minot State got an RBI single from Lohse, scoring Van Wickler from second base. The Jimmies then rallied to score four runs and take a 4-1 lead before the Beavers got back on the board in the third. Minot State picked up a run on Lohse’s two-out solo home run off of Hope Ransome, which brought the score to 4-2 in favor of the Jimmies. The Beavers were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.

GAME 2 | Jamestown 2, Minot State 1

Minot State pitchers allowed only two runs, but the Beavers could not muster the offense to take advantage, losing to the Jamestown Jimmies by the score of 2-1 on Tuesday. Gabi Dawyduk (1-2) started and took the loss in the circle for Minot State (5-3 overall). The right-hander went four innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on four hits, allowing no walks and striking out two. Kierra Fournier was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going two shutout innings while allowing two hits, walking none and striking out three. Taylor Smith led the way offensively for the Beavers, going 1-for-2 in the ballgame with an RBI. Maizy Whitlow put together a noteworthy day at the dish as well, going 1-for-3 with a double. Trailing 2-0, the Beavers first put runs on the board in the fifth inning. Minot State got an RBI single from Smith, scoring Hannah Murray from third base. The Beavers were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.

Edwards shook off the right knee soreness that he felt going into Tuesday night’s game at Portland and helped lead the Minnesota Timberwolves to a 121-109 victory. Rudy Gobert added 16 points and 15 rebounds for his sixth straight double-double. Karl-Anthony Towns, who had foul trouble early, finished with 13 points for the Western Conference-leading Timberwolves. Deandre Ayton had 22 points and 16 rebounds for the Blazers, who lost their fifth straight. Portland hosts Minnesota again on Thursday night.

NDSU MENS BASKETBALL-HONOR

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (NDSU) – North Dakota State forward Andrew Morgan was named the TicketSmarter Summit League Men’s Basketball Peak Performer of the Week, it was announced Monday. The honor is the first of Morgan’s career and first for a Bison this season. Morgan led NDSU to a pair of key Summit League victories. In the 82-78 overtime win vs. Kansas City, Morgan scored a career-high 31 points and made a career-high 14 free throws. He went 8-for-13 from the field as NDSU swept the season series with Kansas City. Morgan added an 18-point performance in NDSU’s 81-79 victory over Omaha. The Waseca, Minn., native went 7-for-10 from the field and also secured seven rebounds and three assists. For the week, Morgan averaged 24.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, and shot 65 percent from the field.

NDSU FOOTBALL-COACH H IRE

FARGO, N.D. (NDSU) – North Dakota State University has hired Carlton Littlejohn as assistant defensive line coach for the Bison football program, head coach Tim Polasek announced Monday. Littlejohn, who played on four NDSU national championship teams as a linebacker from 2011 to 2014, returns to his alma mater with eight years of experience as a linebackers coach and coordinator. Littlejohn spent five years as the co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Minnesota State Moorhead from 2018 to 2022, and he was the special teams coordinator and linebackers coach at Sioux Falls in 2023. He began his coaching career at the University of Jamestown in 2016 as a special teams coordinator and linebackers coach, and he was at Gustavus Adolphus in 2017 as the co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. In his playing days, Littlejohn was a three-year starter and led the Bison in tackles his final two seasons. He finished fourth in NDSU history with 345 career tackles, which is still the most in the Division I era at NDSU. He was a team captain in 2014 and made the All-Missouri Valley Football Conference first team. Littlejohn graduated from NDSU in May 2017 with a bachelor’s degree in journalism.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Karl-Anthony Towns scored 24 points, Anthony Edwards added 23 and the Minnesota Timberwolves pulled away in the second half for a 121-100 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers on Monday night in a matchup of two of the top teams in the Western Conference. Rudy Gobert had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds as the Timberwolves (37-16) remained atop the Western Conference with their third win in the last four games. It is the 10th time the Timberwolves have won this season when trailing at halftime, which is second in the NBA. The Timberwolves trailed 53-49 at halftime, but seized control in the third quarter, outscoring the Clippers 40-19. The Timberwolves’ largest lead was 24 points during the fourth quarter. Paul George and Kawhi Leonard led the Clippers with 18 points apiece and James Harden added 17. Los Angeles, which is 27-7 since the start of December, is in third place in the Western Conference with a 35-17 record. The Timberwolves play at Portland for two straight games beginning Tuesday.

MSU MENS BASKETBALL

MINOT, N.D. (MSU) – The Minot State men’s basketball team got a 36-point performance from the bench, but fell 72-68 to the Saint Cloud State Huskies at the MSU Dome on Super Bowl Sunday in NSIC action as the Huskies finished on a 20-0 run. The 15h-ranked Beavers (18-6 overall, 13-5 NSIC) had three players score in double figures, led by Caleb Van De Griend, who had 15 points. Jalen Cook tacked on 14 points and six rebounds off the bench and Connor Hollenbeck chipped in as well with 10 points. Minot State did an excellent job taking care of the basketball, dishing out 10 assists while turning the ball over five times. Individually, Ben Bohl dished out the most for the Beavers with three assists. After jumping out to an 11-8 advantage, Minot State went on a 7-0 run with 13:20 left in the first half to increase its lead to 18-8. The Beavers then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 36-31 advantage. Minot State did most of its first-half damage in the paint, scoring 22 of its 36 points close to the basket. Following intermission, Minot State kept widening that lead, expanding it to 57-50 before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Kameron Givens’ jumper, to grow the lead to 63-50 with 7:13 to go in the contest. Saint Cloud State then asserted control, outscoring the Beavers 22-5 the rest of the way to hand Minot State the 72-68 loss. Minot State got a boost from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 14 of its 32 total points.

MSU WOMENS BASKETBALL

MINOT, N.D. (MSU) – The Minot State women’s basketball team went into the half beating Saint Cloud State 22-19, but could not hang on in the second half and fell 57-54 to the Huskies at the MSU Dome on Super Bowl Sunday in NSIC action. The Beavers (8-19 overall, 5-13 NSIC) had two players score in double figures, led by Jaime Skeggs, who had 15 points. Lorelei McIver added 10 points, seven rebounds and two steals and Sydney Gustavsson added nine points, seven rebounds and three steals. Minot State out-rebounded Saint Cloud State 39-36 in Sunday’s game, paced by seven boards from Emily Srejma. The Minot State defense held Saint Cloud State shooters to only 33.8 percent from the field.

After falling behind 4-0, Minot State went on a 10-0 run with 7:22 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Skeggs, to take a 10-4 lead. The Beavers then added two points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 14-6 advantage. Minot State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 14 points. Minot State kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 6-0 run starting at the 5:26 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Gustavsson, to increase its lead to 22-13. The Huskies cut into that lead, but the Beavers still enjoyed a 22-19 advantage heading into halftime. Minot State dominated in the paint, scoring four of its eight points close to the basket. Minot State continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a three from McIver, to expand its lead further to 31-21 with 5:43 to go in the third. Saint Cloud State responded to seize a 43-40 lead entering the fourth quarter. Minot State played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 18 points in the paint. Saint Cloud State kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 51-45 advantage before Minot State went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Ashley Wacha’s jumper, to shrink the deficit to 51-50 with 3:17 to go in the contest. Saint Cloud State responded and outscored the Beavers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 57-54. Minot State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring eight of its 14 points in the paint.

MSU WOMENS HOCKEY

MINOT, N.D. (MSU) – Back to round out the second game of a back-to-back at Maysa Arena, the Minot State women’s hockey team was in search of the sweep over the Assiniboine Community College Cougars. The Beavers are coming off a thrilling 1-0 overtime win the night before, with another win in mind. Minot State (18-10-1) did just that with a 3-0 win over Assiniboine (13-2-1) and handing their second regulation loss of the season. It was another feisty battle, as the competitive nature did not waiver. The Beavers were grinding for pucks and did everything they could to get the upper edge on Assiniboine in all facets, all that to go along with forcing key turnovers. They were rewarded with a couple of fortunate bounces to go their way. They were opportunistic as well, as Minot kicked off the scoring showing great patience on a breakaway goal for the ice breaker. That goal at eight minutes exactly would be the only marker of the first period. Early in the second, the Beavers snuck one in past the goalie pad 21 seconds into the period. Then at 12:04, a costly errant pass by the Assiniboine defenseman allowed one of the Beavers top shooters to take advantage and beat the goalie on the glove side. Despite a heavy push by a deflated Cougars squad, that was all the scoring that would take place and the final would remain at 3-0 at the end of the third.

The captain Riley Ball had herself a night, scoring two of the three Beaver goals. She moves up the goal list adding her sixth and seventh on the year. Kaitlyn Snyder was also the recipient of her sixth. Haylie Biever was a brick wall today in a sensational performance. She stopped all 30 shots that came her way, with plenty of them being high danger chances. It is also her second shutout of the weekend, with a shutout streak that now sits at 121:06. The Beavers pick up a huge weekend sweep over Assiniboine Community College, a sweep that was not easy by any means. In their first two meetings with Assiniboine under affiliation of MSU Athletics, both resulted in Beaver wins. Minot State will be back on home ice next weekend to wrap up the regular season. The University of Jamestown Jimmies will be back to battle the Beavers in what should be another hard-fought series. Puck drop is slated for February 16 and 17, with Senior Day festivities taking place during Saturday’s game.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A day after losing to Minnesota in salary arbitration, utilityman Nick Gordon was traded from the Twins to the Miami Marlins on Sunday for left-handed reliever Steven Okert. Gordon, a 28-year-old outfielder, second baseman and shortstop, hit .185 last season with two homers and seven RBIs in 34 games, down from .272 with nine homers and 50 RBIs over 136 games in 2022. He fractured his right shin when he fouled off a pitch from the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Dylan Covey on May 17. Gordon was sidelined until Sept. 15, when he started a six-game rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A St. Paul. He had a .250 batting average with 15 homers and 80 RBIs in three seasons with the Twins. Gordon was awarded a $900,000 salary on Saturday rather than his request for $1.25 million. He is a half-brother of former Marlin Dee Strange-Gordon and a son of former All-Star pitcher Tom Gordon. Okert was 3-2 with a 4.45 ERA in 64 relief appearances last year for the Marlins, striking out 73 and walking 24 in 58 2/3 innings while allowing nine home runs. The 32-year-old is 12-9 with a 3.70 ERA in six seasons with San Francisco (2016-18) and Miami (2021-23). Okert agreed last month to a one-year contract for $1,062,500.
