MSU MENS HOCKEY

CHESTERFIELD, MO. (MSU) – Not quite the weekend they were expecting, but the Beavers showed a lot of grit and effort to force the result that took place at Maryville University Hockey Center on Saturday night. The Minot State men’s hockey team was back to wrap up a weekend set with the Saints, a team that has been well conditioned and battle tested from multiple heavyweight matchups all season long. No. 1 Minot State (26-6-1) found their clutch gene to force the tie with 8th-ranked Maryville (21-9-2) in a 2-2 score. After two goals from each side, the game had to be decided past regulation. The Saints would end up getting the extra point in the shootout following a scoreless overtime session. Things started rather well for the Beavers, as they tallied the opening goal at 10:31 of the first. It would remain 1-0 after one heading into the second, where the Saints answered to tie it at 17:46. 1-1 at the end of the second period would set up for a dramatic third. Maryville took their first lead of the night with exactly nine minutes left in regulation. Significant time would pass, where the Beavers found themselves in need of a last-minute push. It would go down to the wire when Minot State rallied with 10 seconds to go. With constant offensive zone pressure late, the Beavers stuffed home the game-tying goal. The five-minute overtime period did not produce a winner, which meant that it was up to the players’ skills in the shootout. Maryville went on to score once and that was all they needed as Minot State did not capitalize on all three of their shots. The Beavers scored once in the first period and once in the third. Getting the ice breaker was Reece Henry. Also picking himself back up on the scoresheet was Reid Arnold. His 20th of the season was the goal that forced the tie late in regulation. Riley Wallace got his turn to man the crease for Minot. He stopped 28 of 30 shots and two of three in the shootout. Minot State will leave Missouri winless against Maryville in their first two meetings with the Saints under affiliation of MSU Athletics. The Beavers finish the four-game road trip with a 2-1-1 record. They will be back on home ice for a two-game exhibition series when Simon Fraser University comes to the Magic City. Maysa Arena is the place to be at on February 16 and 17 when the Beavers battle the Red Leafs.

MSU WOMENS HOCKEY

MINOT, N.D. (MSU) – It was an absolute fight till the very end! You could not have found another tight, competitive battle than what just took place at Maysa Arena on Saturday. The Minot State women’s hockey team welcomed Assiniboine Community College for the first time this season. It was also the Beavers first meeting with the Cougars under affiliation of MSU Athletics. After a scoreless 60 minutes of regulation, Minot State (17-10-1) finally found a way to finish as they defeated Assiniboine (13-1-1) by a final score of 1-0 in overtime. Both teams were dialed in and focused intensely on the details of the game. It was a defensive juggernaut with minimal space to work with on all ends of the ice. Along with that, there were hardly any mistakes made by either side. After more space on the ice opened for three-on-three overtime, the Beavers wasted no time putting an emphasis on early puck possession. After a few sequences on each end, the Beavers were able to break through at 1:06 of overtime on a nice cycle of the puck in the Cougars zone. While cutting across top of the circles, Kaitlyn Snyder saw Cameron Schmidt driving the net. She relayed a return pass over to her stick on the back door for the tap-in goal and eventual game winner. Schmidt’s fifth of the season gave the Beavers all kinds of an adrenaline rush to end the game. Haylie Biever could not have played any better as the starter in net for Minot. She was perfect as she stopped all 26 shots from Assiniboine.

MSU TRACK & FIELD

BROOKINGS, S.D. (MSU) – Minot State sprinter Nasir Dilworth enjoyed a day to remember on the track for the Beavers. A day that will be easy to remember, too, as Dilworth wrote his name into Minot State’s NCAA Division II era record book in two events, the men’s 60-meter hurdles and 200 meters at the South Dakota State University Indoor Classic. Dilworth started his day finishing ninth in the hurdles in the prelims as he just missed out on the finals, clocking a time of 8.22 seconds that broke the school record of teammate Nathan Trujillo-Aragon of 8.39 which Trujillo-Aragon clocked earlier this season. With one record performance already under his belt, Dilworth added another as he shaved .02 seconds off the school record in the 200 meters, finishing 21st in the event in 22.58 seconds to break the previous fastest time of 22.60 run by Tyler Bates in 2015. While Dilworth led the way, the rest of the Beavers also turned in some fantastic finishes on the day as Ramon Duran added another D-II era school record in the men’s 400 meters as he finished fourth in the event in 48.76 seconds to break the old record of 49.43 run by Tyler Flatland in 2014.

On the women’s side, Sidra Sadowsky added the fourth new Beaver record as she was ninth on the day in the women’s 800 meters in 2 minutes, 14.11 seconds which broke the previous Minot State best time of 2:14.36 clocked by Whitney Hansen in 2021. And rounding out the day was Peyton Tuhy who added one more record performance for the Minot State men as he finished 11th in the 1,000 meters at the SDSU Indoor Classic in 2:31.27 which bested the old record of 2:33.05 in the event run by Trent Holiday last season. The record-setting day gives Minot State momentum as it races toward the NSIC Indoor Championships held Feb. 23-24. Prior to the Championships, though, the Beavers get one more weekend to fine-tune their performances at the UND Tune Up next Saturday. After waiting a long time, the Beavers exact revenge on Assiniboine for the heartbreaking postseason losses from the days of ACHA division two. Minot State picks up their first win in the first meeting versus Assiniboine under MSU Athletics affiliation. Both teams will meet again tomorrow at Maysa Arena. Puck drop is set for 1:00 p.m. (CT) on the same day as the big game.

NDSU WOMENS BASKETBALL

OMAHA, Neb. (NDSU) – Five Bison reached double figures in scoring as the North Dakota State women’s basketball team picked up an 84-70 win over Omaha on Saturday afternoon at Baxter Arena. Heaven Hamling recorded 16 points with four rebounds and three assists, while Abby Krzewinski also notched a career-high 16 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the field. Abby Schulte added in a season-high 15 points with six rebounds and Elle Evans added in 12 points and seven rebounds of her own. Abbie Draper logged her first career double-double with a career-high 13 rebounds and 12 points. She also added in a game-high four steals with two blocks. As a team, the Bison (14-9, 8-2 Summit) shot 51.9 percent (28-54) from the field and 83.3 percent (20-24) from the free throw line. NDSU also snatched 43 rebounds in comparison to Omaha’s 27. NDSU got off to a fast start in the opening frame building up a double-digit lead, 24-11, after Hamling buried her second three-pointer of the frame at the 3:32 mark. Omaha (5-19, 1-10 Summit) pushed back in the second quarter putting together an 8-2 run to trim the edge to two, 28-26, following a layup from Katie Keitges with 8:12 to play in the half. The Bison responded closing the frame on a 12-3 run capped off by triple from Miriley Simon at the buzzer to make the score 48-39 at the intermission. The Bison slowly stretched their lead back up to 10, 52-42, after a jumper and layup from Draper at the 7:51 mark of the third quarter. The Mavericks made one final surge assembling a 7-0 run to cut the deficit down to four, 53-49, following a free throw from Kennedi Grant with 4:38 on the clock. NDSU quickly increased its advantage back up to 10, 63-53, with the use of an 8-2 run finished off by a jumper from Hamling at the 1:52 mark. NDSU went on to hold off Omaha over the final quarter to secure the 84-70 win. NDSU will be back in action on Thursday night hosting Oral Roberts. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m., at Scheels Center.

NDSU MENS BASKETBALL

FARGO, N.D. (NDSU) – The North Dakota State men’s basketball team saw its 13-point second-half lead vanish in the final minute, but the Bison held on for an 81-79 win over Omaha on Saturday afternoon inside the Scheels Center. After starting the game making just 2-of-11 from three-point range, the Bison drained 10 of their next 12 attempts from beyond the arc. NDSU finished 13-of-26 (50 percent) from downtown, and shot 54 percent overall in the game. NDSU led 74-63 with 3:30 remaining in the contest. A 9-1 burst by the Mavericks cut the margin to three at 75-72 with 34 seconds on the clock. Damari Wheeler-Thomas made six free throws in the final 34 seconds to hold on, as the Bison saw Frankie Fidler’s potential game-winning three-point attempt come up short for Omaha in the closing seconds. Junior Andrew Morgan finished with 18 points and seven rebounds for NDSU. Boden Skunberg scored 13 points, Jacari White had 12 on four three-pointers, and Noah Feddersen added 11 points, eight rebounds and five assists for the Bison. With the victory, NDSU improved to 5-5 in The Summit League and 12-13 overall. Omaha fell to 5-6 in the league and 12-14 overall. Bison sophomore Lance Waddles scored 10 points in 18 minutes off the bench. NDSU racked up 18 assists for a new season-high against a Division I opponent. The Bison will play at Oral Roberts on Feb. 15 and at Denver on Feb. 17 next week.

UND WOMENS BASKETBALL

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (UND) – The North Dakota women’s basketball team dropped an 86-71 decision at the Swinney Center to Kansas City Saturday afternoon. The Roos brought the energy to begin the game, as they scored the first nine points and forced a North Dakota timeout just two minutes in. Kansas City’s lead would expand to 13 before the Fighting Hawks found their first points of the day on a pair of free throws from Kiyah Hurst. Kansas City was in an offensive rhythm during the first 10 minutes, connecting on 11-of-16 field goal attempts with a pair of three-pointers to bring a 25-11 lead into the second frame. KC had 14 points in the paint and eight points off five UND turnovers. While the Hawks offense began to pick up their pace in the second quarter, Kansas City’s offense remained steady and matched UND’s point total to hold a 45-31 halftime lead. Borowicz paced the Fighting Hawks in the opening 20 minutes with 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting with three treys, while Destinee Oberg corralled six rebounds in eight minutes off the bench for UND. Both teams knocked down four three-pointers in the first half, but the difference came in the lane with KC holding an edge in points in the paint (24-8) and in points off turnovers (15-4). Borowicz scored a team-high 25 points with four three-pointers, six assists and four rebounds. Hurst and Kiera Pemberton joined Borowicz in double-figures with 16 and 11 points, respectively. Hurst tallied three steals while Pemberton had two.

Kansas City opened the second half in similar fashion as the first quarter, with an 8-2 run that caused UND to call a timeout with 8:03 on the clock with a 53-33 KC lead. A pair of free throws midway through the period gave KC a 25 advantage, but the Hawks scored nine straight with points from four different players, to cut the deficit to 16. However, the Roos scored the next seven and led 70-47 going into the final frame. The Fighting Hawks outscored KC 24-16 in the fourth quarter and brought a 26-point KC lead to as few as 14 points but were unable to pull within single-digits. Hurst knocked down a pair of three-pointers and went 4-of-6 from the field for 12 points in the fourth. UND made four of its nine triples in the final quarter with Borowicz and Mikayla Aumer also connecting from deep. The Hawks will return to the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center for a pair of home games beginning with Denver Thursday night.

UND MENS BASKETBALL

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (UND) – After shooting well over 50% from the field and scoring 99 points in a win over Omaha Thursday night, the North Dakota men’s basketball team went cold from the floor Saturday—shooting 39.5% in a 65-47 loss to Kansas City. The Fighting Hawks hit only three times from downtown after making 13 treys against the Mavericks Thursday. B.J. Omot led the team with 15 points, while Amar Kuljuhovic led with nine rebounds. Tyree Ihenacho led with four assists while Eli King grabbed six steals—which tied for the most in the Division I era. The last player with six swipes in a game for the green and white was Geno Crandall on March 1, 2018 against Sacramento State. Neither team got on the board in the first two minutes of play. Kansas City got the first basket at the 17:51 mark of the half, quickly answered by UND to tie at two. From there the Roos went on a 7-0 run to take the lead and led the rest of the way. With 9:15 left in the first half, UND trailed 18-9 but went on a 10-2 run—four points coming from Kuljuhovic and four from Omot. But the Roos quickly pushed the lead back to seven and led by that many at the break—30-23. In the second half, Kansas City had pushed the lead to 14 when Ihenacho found King from the baseline and got it out to King who hit a three. On the other end Brady Danielson came up with a steal and then King found Omot in transition for a dunk and it made the game 43-34. But NoDak would get no closer the rest of the way. The Fighting Hawks will be back on the road next week, traveling to Denver on Thursday then playing at Oral Roberts next Saturday.

MSU MENS HOCKEY

CHESTERFIELD, MO. (MSU) – It was a game with a high-stakes momentum swing, as the Minot State men’s hockey team was in Missouri to kickstart a two-game set with Maryville University. The Beavers battled with the Saints in a hard-fought contest. Unfortunately, it would be the No. 1 Beavers (26-6-0) falling to Maryville (20-9-2) by a final score of 3-2. Minot State got behind the eight ball early, falling 2-0 after the first period. The Saints were both determined and confident in their first two goals, with a nice follow-up effort just 46 seconds into the game and a finisher on the power play at 8:41. The Beavers did not let that get into their head, as they put on their hard hats and went to work. An opportunity to get back in it on the power play is just what the doctor ordered at 2:12 in the second period. And sometimes, you might just get lucky if you work hard enough. Thus, the Beavers were rewarded after redirecting the puck in traffic for a tie game. Inching closer to the one-minute mark of the third, a heartbreaker of a goal and incredible hand-eye coordination by Maryville for the game winner seals it with 1:10 left to go in regulation. Down 2-0, it was Joey Moffatt who got the Beavers back to a one-goal deficit to cut the lead in half. His 10th was followed by Walker Jerome’s eighth of the season as he got a touch on a shot from the blue line that trickled in. Jake Anthony got the start in net for the Beavers. After the early 2-0 deficit, he regained composure and gave his team a chance to win with 31 saves on 34 shots. Both teams will meet again tonight for an 8:00 p.m. (CT) puck drop at Maryville University Hockey Center.

MSU TRACK & FIELD

BROOKINGS, S.D. (MSU) – It was a memorable evening on the track for the Beavers’ senior distance runner Grayson Bonilla. Bonilla nearly won the men’s 5,000 meters Friday evening at the South Dakota State University Indoor Classic, finishing second in the event in a career-best time of 15 minutes, 49.17 seconds. Bonilla’s time ranks ninth-best in the NSIC this winter and led the way for the Minot State track and field teams at the meet, which concludes today. Emery Smith led the way for the Minot State women as she was 10th in the women’s 5,000 meters in 18:34.38, while teammate Paulette Dominguez added an 18th-place finish in the women’s 3,000 in 10:33.67, and Camden Jasmin was 49th in the men’s 3,000 meters in 9:17.44 as a limited number of Beavers competed on Friday night.

MSU MENS WRESTLING

ABERDEEN, S.D. (MSU) – Senior Cayden White picked a win by pin in his 184-pound match, sparking a surge in the heavyweights for the Beavers who scored a 24-18 road dual win over NSIC rival Northern State on Friday. White pinned the Wolves’ Sam Kruger in 2 minutes, 33 seconds, giving the Beavers (9-7 duals, 4-4 NSIC) a crucial six team points as Minot State won the final three matches of the dual to erase a 19-11 deficit. Cannon Potts added a 9-5 decision victory over Treyton Cacek at 197 pounds to giving Minot State a 20-19 lead, then Jake Swirple won a 17-9 major decision at 285 pounds to wrap up the victory. Northern State lost one team point for a misconduct, leading to the final 24-18 score. While Minot State dominated the top-end weights, they got things started at 133 pounds with a 13-2 major decision win by Wayne Joint for an early 4-3 lead. After back-to-back wins for the Wolves, Kelby Armstrong added an 11-1 major decision win for the Beavers in the 157-pound match, then Brendan Barnes scored a 4-1 sudden-victory win at 165 pounds as he scored a takedown in overtime for the victory over Chase Bloomquist. A pin for Northern State gave them a 19-11 advantage before the Beavers charge in the heavyweights for the victory. The Beavers have one more regular-season match on the schedule left as they head to Minnesota State Moorhead next Saturday for a final dual before hosting the Super Region V tournament on Saturday, March 2, at the All-Seasons Arena at the North Dakota State Fairgrounds.

WILD-PENGUINS

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Kirill Kaprizov scored the tiebreaking goal midway through the third period and Marc-Andre Fleury made 32 saves as the Minnesota Wild beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2 on Friday night. Matt Boldy and Jonas Brodin also scored for Minnesota, which has won five of seven. Fleury, who earned his 553rd career win, was honored in a pregame ceremony nearly a month after passing Patrick Roy (551) for second place in NHL history. He trails only Martin Brodeur, who has 691 wins. With the team that drafted Fleury first overall in 2003 and where he won three Stanley Cups looking on, including former teammates still in Pittsburgh, the Wild honored Fleury with a video tribute and the goalie was given a silver, engraved stick noting his topping 1,000 games played, a $5,000 donation to a charity of Fleury’s choice and a souvenir mask with each of the four teams he played on. Reilly Smith and Sidney Crosby scored for the Penguins, and Alex Nedeljkovic made 27 saves. The Wild play at Vegas on Monday night.

MSU MENS BASKETBALL

MOORHEAD, Minn. (MSU) – The 15th-ranked Minot State men’s basketball team fell to the 9th-ranked Minnesota State Moorhead Dragons 81-79 on the road Thursday in NSIC action on Ja’Kair Sanchez’s buzzer-beating 3-pointer as time expired. The Beavers (18-5 overall, 13-4 NSIC) had four players score in double figures, led by Connor Hollenbeck, who had 23 points and seven rebounds. Khari Broadway added 19 points and two steals and eclipsed 2,000 career points in the game and now has 2,006 in his collegiate career, while Ben Bohl chipped in as well with 12 points and two steals. The loss was the second time this season the Dragons beat the Beavers based on a last-second 3 as then No. 2-ranked MSU Moorhead beat Minot State on a missed Beavers 3, 77-74, at the MSU Dome back on December 16.

After jumping out to a 10-7 advantage, Minot State went on a 7-0 run with 12:16 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Jaxon Gunville, to increase its lead to 17-7. The Beavers then surrendered that lead and entered halftime down 31-30. Minnesota State Moorhead kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 54-44 advantage before Minot State went on a 10-0 run, finished off by Gunville’s three, to even the score at 54 all with 11:13 to go in the contest. The Beavers could not turn their rally into a victory, as the Dragons outscored them 27-25 the rest of the way to hand Minot State the 81-79 loss. A see-saw finish as the teams traded the lead six times in the final 5 minutes with a pair of Hollenbeck free throws giving Minot State a 79-78 lead in the final minute before Sanchez’s game-winner just before the buzzer.

MSU WOMENS BASKETBALL

MOORHEAD, Minn. (MSU) – Sydney Gustavsson and Ashley Wacha combined to score 32 total points – 61.5 percent of Minot State’s points – but the Beavers fell to the Minnesota State Moorhead Dragons 56-52 on the road Thursday in NSIC action. Gustavsson led the Beavers (8-18 overall, 5-12 NSIC) with a season-high 25 points and eight rebounds. Wacha added seven points and two steals from the bench and Vilborg Jonsdottir helped out with six points, seven rebounds and four assists. Minot State shared the ball well in Thursday’s game, racking up 15 assists on 20 made field goals. Jonsdottir’s four assists paced the Beavers and Jaime Skeggs also helped out with four assists of her own. Minot State forced 18 Minnesota State Moorhead turnovers while committing 11 themselves in Thursday’s game. The Beavers turned those takeaways into 16 points on the other end of the floor. Lorelei McIver’s three steals led the way for Minot State.

Minot State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 15-9 at the end of the first quarter. Minot State then started off the second quarter by going on a 6-0 run, highlighted by a three from Wacha, to tie the game at 15. Minnesota State Moorhead then took control, putting the Beavers at a 27-20 disadvantage heading into halftime. After intermission, Minot State cut its deficit to 40-34 before going on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Jonsdottir, to tie things up at 40 with 58 seconds to go in the third. The Beavers could not advance their rally further as the Dragons took a 42-40 lead into the fourth quarter. Minot State took advantage of six Minnesota State Moorhead turnovers in the quarter, scoring eight points off of takeaways. Minot State could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 56-52. Minot State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring six of its 12 points in the paint.

NDSU made 33-of-38 (87 percent) at the free throw line, paced by a 14-for-16 effort by Morgan and a perfect 10-for-10 by Skunberg. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (NDSU) – The North Dakota State women’s basketball team grinded out a 70-59 win at Kansas City on Thursday night at Swinney Center. Heaven Hamling paced the Bison (13-9, 7-2 Summit) with a game-high 15 points to go along with four steals, four rebounds and two assists. UND MENS BASKETBALL

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (UND) – For the first time since the 1994-95 season, the North Dakota men’s basketball team has won seven straight games in conference play. Not only did tonight’s win over Omaha give the green and white its first seven game conference winning streak of the Division I era, but its first seven game winning streak as a DI team overall as the last seven game winning streak came in the 2007-08 season—the final season playing in Division II. For the first time since 2020, three Fighting Hawks scored 20+ points. Treysen Eaglestaff led the team with 28, followed by B.J. Omot with 26 and Tyree Ihenacho with 22. Amar Kuljuhovic grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the way on the glass, the fourth time in the last five games that he has posted 10+ rebounds. Ihenacho led with four assists while Eaglestaff led with three steals. Early in the first half the score was tied at 4-4, but Ihenacho made the next basket that started a 9-0 run for NoDak and the Fighting Hawks never looked back. Ihenacho scored ten of the first 16 points for UND and ten of the first 22 overall, and from there the hosts never let Omaha get back into the game and took a 20-point lead into intermission at 51-31. In the second half the lead for UND went up to as many as 30 as the game never reached single digits. Eaglestaff got a fitting curtain call as he hit a three pointer to close out his night before making way for the substitutes, who saw out the 21 point win. The Fighting Hawks will close out a three game homestand on Saturday afternoon, hosting Kansas City at 1 p.m.

UND WOMENS BASKETBALL

OMAHA, Neb. (UND) – The North Dakota women’s basketball team earned its third road victory of the season Thursday night, 83-81 over Omaha at Baxter Arena. After Omaha opened up the second quarter with an 11-0 run, forcing a UND timeout, the Hawks roared back by outscoring the Mavericks 27-11 over the final eight minutes of the first half. North Dakota closed the half on a 19-3 run and received points from five different players during the stretch to carry a 49-38 lead into the locker room. Kiera Pemberton was a catalyst for the UND offense during the run, scoring eight of the 19 UND points. The Hawks were nearly perfect inside the arc, connecting on 12-of-13 two-point attempts in the frame, and went 3-for-3 from the charity stripe. All three of UND’s free throws were and-one conversions with two courtesy of Pemberton and one from Fatima Ibrahim. Five straight points from Mikayla Aumer to start the fourth quarter, started a 9-2 run as UND pulled ahead 67-66 after the first two minutes. The lead flipped hands twice in the ensuing possessions, and after an Omaha and-one, they would hold the lead until the two-minute mark when a Kiyah Hurst jumper gave NoDak an 81-80 edge. A pair of clutch free throws from Beal with 1:34 left in the game would prove to be the difference, as Omaha’s game tying shot was off the mark and UND held on to the win. Borowicz just missed her fourth double-double of the season with 18 points and nine rebounds. The senior guard also dished out five assists. Pemerton matched Borowicz’s point total with 18 points of her own on 8-of-13 shooting and eight boards. Aumer chipped in 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting. The Fighting Hawks received 21 points from their bench unit, led by Rakiyah Beal’s eight. North Dakota continues its road trip Saturday when they face Kansas City in the Swinney Center.

WOLVES-BUCKS

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Anthony Edwards had 26 points and nine assists and the Minnesota Timberwolves shot 21 of 41 from 3-point range to trounce the slumping Milwaukee Bucks 129-105 on Thursday night. Karl-Anthony Towns scored 19 points, Mike Conley added 18, Naz Reid 17 and Rudy Gobert 16 as the Timberwolves spoiled the home debut of new Bucks coach Doc Rivers, whose No. 31 Marquette jersey hangs from the Fiserv Forum rafters. Rivers opened his Milwaukee coaching tenure with a five-game trip during which the Bucks went 1-4. The Bucks were operating at far less than full strength. Damian Lillard missed a second straight game and Khris Middleton also was out because of their sprained ankles, though Brook Lopez returned after missing three games as his wife gave birth to their child. Both teams had short benches after making deals before Thursday’s trade deadline. The Bucks sent Cam Payne and a second-round pick to the Philadelphia 76ers for Patrick Beverley, while Minnesota dealt Troy Brown, Shake Milton and a second-round pick to the Detroit Pistons for Monte Morris. Neither Beverley nor Morris was available for Thursday night’s game. The Timberwolves visit the Los Angeles Clippers on Monday.

MSU WOMENS HOCKEY

MINOT, N.D. (MSU) – In a game that featured a lot of ugly moments and physicality, it was the Minot State women’s hockey team that would find a way to get the job done. The Beavers were back on home ice to kickstart a five-game home stand that runs until the end of the regular season. Jamestown made it up to the Magic City to complete the second of a two-game series that was postponed retroactive to January 14. Minot State (16-10-1) and Jamestown (13-12-0) went head-to-head in a game that was hard hitting and produced rivalry inducing moments. The Beavers won 2-1, but it took some time to get going. To Jamestown’s credit, they hung in there while Minot State struggled to produce after 40 minutes of action.

The first period was scoreless, with both teams still looking for the ice breaker. The Jimmies struck first as Jayden Baker snuck in past the Beaver defense to score via the backhand at 15:06 of the second. Down 1-0, the Beavers had to find an answer quick heading into the third. Nearing the halfway mark of the third period, Minot State would respond in a huge way to tie it at one goal apiece at 9:16. With all momentum shifted, there was still a lot of time left in regulation. Working towards the final five minutes, the Beavers would get a boost on a power play opportunity. Minot State did indeed capitalize on a great passing sequence for the go-ahead goal. The Beavers rallied late, as they held on for the 2-1 win over a feisty Jamestown squad. Both teams will meet again for the final weekend series of the regular season on February 16 and 17. Elevating her game first for the Beavers was Paige Ackerman, as her sixth of the year resulted as the game-tying goal. A perfect setup on the power play was finished by Krissy Rink for her eighth of the season and the eventual game winner at 14:45 of the third. Morgan Baker was the stopgap in net tonight, as she turned down 19 of 20 shots.

The Beavers collected win number six on the year versus Jamestown and their 15th in the all-time series. They will be back at Maysa Arena this weekend to welcome ACHA division two Assiniboine Community College. Puck drop is scheduled for 3:45 p.m. (CT) on Saturday and 1:00 p.m. (CT) on Sunday.

WILD-BLACKHAWKS

CHICAGO (AP) — Marcus Foligno and Nick Foligno both scored Wednesday night. Marcus Foligno also got into a fight, and then walked away with the win. This one went to the younger brother. Marcus Foligno snapped a third-period tie and Filip Gustavsson made 20 saves, sending the Minnesota Wild to a 2-1 victory over Nick Foligno and the lowly Chicago Blackhawks. The Foligno brothers matched up in the first game for the Central Division foes after the All-Star break, and Marcus Foligno’s ninth of the season lifted Minnesota to its 11th consecutive victory over Chicago. Foligno also tangled with Blackhawks defenseman Jarred Tinordi in the second. Jacob Lucchini scored in the first for Minnesota, which had dropped two in a row. The game was tied at 1 when Vinni Lettieri set up Foligno right on the doorstep for the tap-in goal. The Wild host the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday night.

MINOT, N.D. (MSU) – Sara Van Wickler provided the dramatic walk-off winner in game one, then pitcher Kierra Fournier shut down a late Jamestown rally as Minot State swept a non-conference doubleheader from Jamestown, 4-3 in 8 innings and 5-4 on Tuesday at the MSU Bubble.

GAME 1 | Minot State 4, Jamestown 3

Junior Reegan Floyd was dominant on Tuesday, punching out eight Jamestown hitters over seven innings of work to help power the Minot State Beavers past the Jimmies 4-3. In addition to her eight strikeouts, Floyd went seven innings, giving up three runs, all of them earned, on seven hits and walking two for Minot State (5-1 overall). Senior Gabi Dawyduk (1-1) also made an impact in the circle for the Beavers, throwing one shutout inning while allowing no hits, with no walks and one strikeout. At the plate, the Beavers were led by junior Abby Lohse, who went 1-for-3 on the day with a home run, a walk and two RBI. Sophomore Sara Van Wickler compiled a noteworthy performance as well, going 2-for-4 with a walk and two RBI. Senior Taryn Bennett also helped out for Minot State, putting together one hit in four trips to the plate while adding a triple.

The Beavers got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the bottom the first inning with the game still scoreless. Minot State got an RBI single from Van Wickler, scoring junior Abbey Kelley from third base. The Beavers then held the Jimmies scoreless before expanding their lead in the third inning. Minot State scored twice on Lohse’s two-run homer, which brought the Beavers lead to 3-0. Jamestown then rallied to tie the ballgame at 3-3 before Minot State walked it off in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single off the bat of Van Wickler.

GAME 2 | Minot State 5, Jamestown 4

The Minot State Beavers took a 2-0 lead in the first inning and never surrendered the advantage on the way to a 5-4 win over the Jamestown Jimmies on Tuesday. Sophomore Kierra Fournier (2-0) started in the circle and picked up the win for Minot State. The right-hander went seven innings, giving up four runs, all of them earned, on nine hits, allowing one walk and striking out five. In the batter’s box, the Beavers were led by freshman Taylor Eatherton, who went 2-for-4 on the day with a double and three RBI. Senior Gabi Dawyduk put together a noteworthy performance at the plate as well, going 2-for-3 with two RBI. Sophomore Taylor Smith also helped out for Minot State, putting together one hit in two trips to the plate while adding a double and a walk.

The Beavers got the scoring started early, putting two runs on the board in the bottom the first inning with the game still scoreless. Dawyduk drove in two runs for Minot State with a single, that scored junior Abby Lohse and sophomore Paige Kellogg. The Jimmies failed to push any runs across before the Beavers offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning. Minot State scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Eatherton, which brought the score to 3-0 in favor of the Beavers. Jamestown narrowed Minot State’s lead to 3-2 before the Beavers stretched the advantage to 5-2 in the sixth inning. The Beavers pushed two runs across on a two-run double off the bat of Eatherton that scored Smith and senior Lexi Barduson. Jamestown put two runs on the scoreboard before the game was over, but Minot State still held on for the 5-4 win.

The two teams meet again in another twinbill hosted by Jamestown next Tuesday.

Fischer and Armstrong did not wrestle on Tuesday but Mohr did, along with Hansen and White, though he dropped a 17-10 decision to Isaac Andersen in their 174-pound match. White and Hansen enjoyed better “Senior Night” results as White won by pin in 45 seconds over Jackson King in their 184-pound match, and Hansen pinned Samuel Adams 1:28 into the second period of their 197-pound match. Those wins helped the Beavers seal the team win which was helped out early by an 18-3 technical fall win for Joint at 133 points, then a 3-0 decision for Hrcka at 149 pounds. Ortega’s win by forfeit put Minot State on top 14-12 in the team score, then Barnes won by pin in 2:02 of the first round in his 165-pound match against Joseph Oliver to put the Beavers comfortably on top, 20-12. White and Hansen’s pins pushed the Beaver lead to 32-15 before Swirple capped the evening with a 16-0 technical fall win in his heavyweight match over Chase Nutting. The final home dual for the Beavers, Minot State now hits the roads the next two weekends starting with a trip to Northern State this Friday.

MSU MENS BASKETBALL

BISMARCK, N.D. (MSU) – The 19th-ranked Minot State men’s basketball team got a 33-point performance from the bench on the way to an 87-53 win over the Mary Marauders on the road Saturday in NSIC action. The Beavers (18-4 overall, 13-3 NSIC) had three players score in double figures, led by Ben Bohl, who had 19 points. Khari Broadway added 12 points, six assists and two steals and Caleb Van De Griend chipped in as well with 10 points and nine rebounds off of the bench. The Minot State offense was very productive from downtown, making 11 threes on 23 attempts. Jaxon Gunville was the most prolific shooter for the Beavers, draining three treys in the contest. With those three 3s, Gunville broke the NCAA Division II-era career record for 3s made, now with 192 in his career which breaks the old record of 190 held by Thomas Korf. Gunville is also No. 2 all-time. The Minot State defense held Mary shooters to just 32.1 percent from the field. The Beavers also kept Zyon Smith to 3-of-13 shooting and seven points in the game.

After jumping out to a 24-18 advantage, Minot State went on a 14-0 run with 5:14 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Bohl, to increase its lead to 38-18. The Beavers then added three points to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 46-23 advantage. Minot State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down eight shots to account for 24 of its 46 points. Following intermission, Minot State kept widening that lead, expanding it to 52-27 before going on a 7-0 run, finished off by Van De Griend’s layup, to grow the lead to 59-27 with 16:16 to go in the contest. The Beavers kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 87-53 win. Minot State took care of business in the paint, recording 24 of its 41 points in the lane.

MSU MENS HOCKEY

ALBERT LEA, MN. (MSU) – Just like Friday night, it was another good day for the Minot State men’s hockey team. They were back in southern Minnesota for the second game of a back-to-back with the Waldorf Warriors. Once again, it was the Beavers cruising along for the ride. The No. 1 Beavers (26-5-0) let nothing get past them with another shutout effort as Minot State finished with the 7-0 win over Waldorf (3-23-3). Through 10 minutes of the first period, the Warriors found themselves weathering the storm. That was until the Beavers broke through with the ice breaker at 11:00 of the first period. Nearly two and a half minutes later, Minot doubled their lead to 2-0 going into the locker room. It was until the second period when the Beavers would take full control of the entire game with five goals in the middle 20-minute frame. Minot opened with four goals halfway through the period, with the fourth one coming at 10:00 on the dot. The Beavers capped their goal scoring efforts with one more for good measure at 18:26. There was no scoring in the third, thus leaving 7-0 as the final. Both teams will not meet again for the rest of 2023-24. Minot State not only sweeps the weekend set, but they also get the regular season series with a perfect 4-0-0 record versus the Warriors.

Minot State was clicking offensively yet again. Colby Joseph had a breakout game himself, as he tallied his 11th and 12th goals of the season. Reid Arnold found the back of the net for the 19th time to keep ahold of the team lead in goals. Carter Barley picked up his 16th, while Joey Moffatt scored another one on the weekend to bring his total to nine. Ryan Monias figured into the offense with his second career collegiate goal. Logan Rands provided a boost from the back end by hitting twine for his fifth of the year. Brayden Pawluk and Jay Buchholz were masterful in distributing the puck. Pawluk had three assists, while Buchholz contributed two other helpers. Tre Sortland got the nod again, who now has consecutive starts in net for the first time this season. He tracked down all seven shots from Waldorf and turned them into saves. The Beavers will continue a long road trip into next weekend. They travel to St. Louis for a series with the Maryville Saints, who they have yet to meet with since affiliation started with MSU Athletics. Both teams will square off on February 9 and 10.

Lematta was fourth at 143 pounds as she won three straight consolation-bracket matches and finished the day 5-2 overall. She had a victory by pin in 4 minutes, 44 seconds over Sioux Fall’s Ciana Grate in the consolation semifinals to advance to the third-place match. Petryna finished fifth at 116 pounds as she went 4-2 on the day, winning three matches by technical fall and the fifth-place match by forfeit over Rodiat Adeduntan of Iowa Central Community College. Kary finished fifth at 130 pounds as she also went 4-2, picking up a win by pin in 2:15 over Rachel Burns of Central Christian College in the championship quarterfinals, and taking home a forfeit victory over Willow Dubois of Baker in the fifth-place match. While they led the way, the Beavers also got victories from Bella Hernandez at 130 pounds, who won three matches by pin, Skye Shelmerdine at 116 pounds, who earned a win by pin, Jazmin Gorder and Trinity Boivin at 123 pounds, who each earned a win by pin, Emily Hill at 136 pounds, who picked up a technical fall victory, and Madison Parsons at 191 pounds, who earned a win by decision. Minot State looks to carry the momentum from a strong showing in its season finale into the postseason at the NCWWC Regional Tournament at the end of February in Denton, Texas.

UND HOCKEY

OXFORD, Ohio (UND) – No. 2 North Dakota polished off a weekend sweep over Miami with a 4-1 victory on Saturday night from Steve Cady Arena in Oxford, Ohio. With the victory, UND (20-6-2, 11-4-1 NCHC) extends its regulation unbeaten streak to 21 games to match the program’s record set back in 2006-07 and will remain in first place in the NCHC standings heading into the scheduled off weekend. Head Coach Brad Berry also recorded his 200th win behind the bench at North Dakota, becoming the fourth coach in program history to achieve the mark. Defenseman Logan Britt carried the load offensively from the backend, scoring a pair of goals for the first time in his career in the victory and finished the weekend with a trio of tallies. Forwards Cameron Berg and Dylan James also added goals, with Berg notching the go-ahead tally in the first period to give the Fighting Hawks the lead for good and James sealing the victory with an empty netter in the late moments of the third. Senior goaltender Ludvig Persson shined in the finale, stopping 33-of-34 in the victory to finish 4-0-0 against his former team during the regular season. The Swede was at his best in the middle period with 16 stops, including a save on a breakaway to keep UND in front. North Dakota will enjoy an open weekend in the schedule before heading back on the road to Colorado College for a series beginning on Friday, Feb. 16 at 8:00 p.m. (CT) from Ed Robson Arena in Colorado Springs, Colo.

UND MENS BASKETBALL

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (UND) – With 0.4 seconds left in the first half, Tyree Ihenacho had shot a deep three that went in. After further review, the basket did not count. But at the end of the game, with the score tied at 58, Ihenacho drove the ball down the court, making a game winning play as he found Amar Kuljuhovic, who took the bounce pass and converted on the game winning layup to put North Dakota up 60-58 with 2.6 seconds left. NDSU got one last look but a three was off the mark as the Fighting Hawks won a hard-fought game at the Betty. Ihenacho led the Fighting Hawks with 15 points, while Kuljuhovic scored 11 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for his second consecutive double-double. Tsotne Tsartsidze also scored in double-figures with ten points.

Tsartsidze and B.J. Omot gave NoDak a quick 6-0 lead with threes to start the game. But NDSU followed with a 13-3 run that gave them a 13-9 lead. Treysen Eaglestaff made a three for the green and white in that stretch, making 20 straight games with a three pointer for the sophomore sharpshooter. He is the first player in the Division I era to make at least one three in 20 consecutive games. The Bison had the upper hand through most of the first half, and each time UND made a run NDSU would respond and keep the home team at bay. The final three points of the first half went to the Fighting Hawks, courtesy of a layup from Ihenacho and a free throw from Kuljuhovic. NoDak got the last shot of the first half, which Ihenacho was unable to get off in time and NDSU led 30-25 going into intermission.

Baskets were hard to come by for either side at the start of the second half, the first coming off a steal by Eaglestaff, who took it in for a breakaway dunk. While NoDak made it a one possession game, once again NDSU had an answer. With 7:55 to go, Andrew Morgan converted a three point play for the Bison to make it a nine point game at 53-44. But this time, UND had an answer with a layup from Tsartsidze, followed by a posterizing dunk from Omot and two foul shots from Eli King to make it a 53-50 affair. With 2:59 to go, Kuljuhovic drew a flagrant foul and brought UND back within one point at 55-54 after converting on two foul shots. Tsartsidze converted a layup on the subsequent possession to put UND up 56-55, the first lead for the home team since the 15:36 mark of the first half at 6-4.

Morgan tied the game at 58 with 1:02 left, and with nine seconds to go had a chance to put NDSU back ahead at the line with a one and one. He missed the first shot and the orange sphere pinballed around before finding the arms of Kuljuhovic. The big man ran down the floor and Ihenacho found him for the game winning basket. The Bison had one last look after advancing the ball into the frontcourt out of the timeout, but a three-point shot from Jacari White would not go as the Fighting Hawks held on. The Fighting Hawks will be back at the Betty next week for games Thursday against Omaha and Saturday against Kansas City.

NDSU WOMENS BASKETBALL

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (NDSU) – Elle Evans netted a career-high 33 points to help lift the North Dakota State women’s basketball team past North Dakota, 101-85, in front of 2,913 fans at Betty Engelstad Sioux Center on Saturday afternoon. With the win, NDSU improves to 12-9 (6-2 Summit) on the season. Under fifth-year head coach Jory Collins, the Bison move to 9-1 against North Dakota (7-15, 3-6 Summit) dating back to 2019-20. Evans led the way for NDSU with a career-high 33 points on 10-of-16 shooting from the field and 11-of-12 from the free throw line. The Edwardsville, Ill., native also snatched a game-high 10 rebounds to log her third double-double of the season. Her 33 points rank tied for the eighth-most in a single-game in NDSU history and marked her fourth game in the last five with at least 20 points. Heaven Hamling also reached double digits in scoring for the third straight game with 19 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field. Abby Schulte handed out a team-best six assists with seven points, while Avery Koenen added in nine points off the bench.

As a team, the Bison netted 100 or more points for the second time this season after scoring 112 against Jamestown on Nov. 9. NDSU shot 47.8 percent (32-67) from the field and 81.8 percent (27-33) from the free throw line with all 10 players reaching the scoring column. The Bison scored 23 points off of turnovers and the bench added in 30 points. After holding a one-point edge after the first quarter, 17-16, NDSU captured momentum putting together a 19-4 run in the second frame spanning over five minutes to increase its lead to 38-20 after Miriley Simon drilled a three-pointer with 4:22 to play in the quarter. The Bison led at the intermission, 47-38. The Bison used an 8-1 run in the third quarter to push their lead into double digits, 58-48, after Evans connected on a jumper at the 5:48 mark. The Fighting Hawks responded chipping the edge back down to two, 64-62, after Kacie Borowicz delivered a layup with 1:38 on the clock. NDSU answered back in the fourth frame with eight straight points to increase its lead to 82-66 following a layup from Koenen with 6:30 to play. The Bison went on to close out the rest of the time to earn the 101-85 victory. NDSU will be back in action at Kansas City on Thursday. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.

TWINS-SIGINGS

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – The Minnesota Twins added a veteran bat on Friday, agreeing to a one-year contract with Carlos Santana that is worth $5.25 million. A person familiar with the deal confirmed the move to the AP on condition of anonymity because it was pending a physical. Santana, who turns 38 in April, played for Pittsburgh and Milwaukee last year, batting .240 with 23 homers and 86 RBIs in 146 games. The first baseman/designated hitter was traded to the Brewers on July 27. The addition of Santana could help replace some of the offensive production that Minnesota lost when it traded second baseman Jorge Polanco to Seattle on Monday. The switch-hitting Polanco batted .255 with 14 homers and 48 RBIs in 80 games last season. The Twins are looking to go back to the playoffs for the fifth time in eight years. They won the AL Central in 2023 and swept Toronto in the wild-card round before they were eliminated by Houston in their AL Division Series. Minnesota also has Alex Kirilloff and Jose Miranda at first, but they have been hampered by injuries and inconsistency. The move puts Santana back in the AL Central after he made his debut with Cleveland in 2010. He spent 10 of his first 11 years in the majors with his first big league franchise. Santana made the AL All-Star team in 2019, batting .281 with 34 homers and a career-best 93 RBIs in 158 games. He also hit 34 homers for Cleveland in 2016. Santana is a .242 hitter with 301 homers and 1,011 RBIs in 1,930 games, also playing for Kansas City, Philadelphia and Seattle.

The Minnesota Twins claimed right-hander Daniel Duarte off waivers Friday from the Texas Rangers, who had acquired the reliever just last month in a cash trade with the Cincinnati Reds. The 27-year-old Duarte had a 3.69 ERA in 31 appearances with a .211 opponent batting average spanning five stints for the Reds last season. He also had a 3.34 ERA in 32 appearances for Triple-A Louisville. Originally signed by the Rangers out of Mexico in 2013, Duarte missed most of the 2022 season with an elbow injury and finished 2023 on the injured list with shoulder trouble. To make room for Duarte on their 40-man roster, the Twins designated right-hander Ryan Jensen for assignment. Jensen was claimed off waivers from the Miami Marlins last month.

MINOT, ND – Minot scored the first two goals of the game, but it would be the home team that came back for the win as St. Cloud skates by the Tauros 6-4 on Friday night. Rylan Jockims tallied two early goals for the Tauros who led 2-1 after one period. Jack O’Hanisain would add a second period goal for Minot, but it was tied at 3-3 after two stanzas. Brady James had 14 saves for Minot on 19 attempts. The Tauros lead in the NAHL Central Division is down to 7 points over Bismarck as the Bobcats have won seven in a row, including a 4-1 win over North Iowa last night. Minot will try to earn a split of the weekend in St. Cloud tonight.

MSU MENS HOCKEY

ALBERT LEA, MN. (MSU) – The number one team in the country wasted no time getting back to work and were just simply potent at the start of another four-game road trip. Minot State men’s hockey was in southern Minnesota to take on the Waldorf Warriors for the first time since mid-October. 1st-ranked Minot State (25-5-0) added another shutout win, taking a 5-0 decision over Waldorf (3-22-3). The game was highlighted by an offensive onslaught and heavy containment defensively by the Beavers. Early in the first period, two minutes in to be exact, was where the Beavers got going with the ice breaker. Waldorf had a fighting chance as the score remained 1-0 after the first. It would seem that way for a while until Minot was finally able to solve the netminder for a second time at the 13:53 mark of the middle frame. Nearly four minutes later, the Beavers thrust the lead further to make it 3-0 at the end of two periods. In the final period of regulation, Minot State would put the game out of reach with two more goals at 7:00 and 13:34 of the third to make the final score 5-0.

Carter Barley continues to surge as of late, with two goals and an assist. He recorded his 14th and 15th goals. Joey Moffatt got back on the scoresheet with his eight of the season plus an assist of his own in the second period. Reid Arnold maintains his goal-scoring lead after registering his 18th. Logan Rands was the other recipient, tallying his fourth goal of the year. Christian Kadolph carries on another fantastic performance from the back end. Add two more assists for the Beaver defenseman on the night. It was a rare occasion that both Riley Wallace and Jake Anthony sat from the sidelines, meaning Tre Sortland got his first start since October 13, 2023. He did not have to do much at all when protecting the net, as he steered away only five shots that came from Waldorf sticks. Minot State won their third game versus Waldorf this season and fourth overall since affiliation started with MSU Athletics. Both teams will be back to square off today at Albert Lea City Arena. Be on the lookout for an early puck drop, which is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. (CT).

The Beavers also added runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings on the way to the 7-0 victory.

Minot State 5, North Dakota State College of Science 3

Hannah Murray added a sacrifice fly for a 3-1 lead in the first for Minot State, which got an RBI base-on-balls from Bennet in the second and an RBI base-on-balls from Lauren DeGuzman in the bottom of the third for a 5-1 lead. The Wildcats (1-1) answered with two runs in the top of the sixth, but Beaver pitcher Kierra Forunier (1-0) shut down the rally and finished off the complete-game win as she struck out six and did not allow a walk. UND HOCKEY

OXFORD, Ohio (UND) – Jackson Blake struck 1:24 into 3-on-3 overtime to complete a two-goal comeback and seal a 5-4 victory for No. 2 North Dakota over Miami on Friday night from Steve Cady Arena in Oxford, Ohio. UND (19-6-2, 10-4-1 NCHC) trailed by a pair of goals entering the final 20 minutes for only the third time all season but third period goals by Logan Britt (3) and Riese Gaber (14) brought the game level before Blake finished off a 2-on-1 rush with a snipe off the back post to seal the extra point in the NCHC standings for the visitors. Blake was once again dynamic in the victory, striking for a goal and two assists to notch his NCHC-leading seventh game this season with at least three points and extended his point streak to nine games. The sophomore has also torched the RedHawks (7-16-2, 1-13-1 NCHC) in his career and now has 15 points in seven contests against Miami. Gaber followed step-for-step with Blake tonight on the offensive side, also recording a trio of points with a goal and two helpers. The senior now has 13 career goals and nine career assists in 12 games against the RedHawks. Junior forward Jackson Kunz continued his strong play from last weekend, striking for his fourth goal of the season and notching the primary assist on Gaber’s tying goal for his first-career game with multiple points. Cameron Berg saw his goal streak come to an end at five games, but extended his point streak to six with a pair of assists in the win to give the junior 11 points over the last nine games. Senior goaltender Ludvig Persson had to battle in his first visit back to Miami, but finished with 27 saves on 31 shots, including a perfect 10-for-10 in the third period and overtime, to help the Fighting Hawks mount the comeback win. The Swede also tallied his second assist of the season and second of his career on Blake’s overtime winner. North Dakota will look for the series sweep tonight at 6:05 p.m. (CT) from Oxford.

WOLVES-MAGIC

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Paolo Banchero had 23 points and six assists to help the Orlando Magic overcome a 17-point second-quarter deficit and beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 108-106 on Friday. Wendell Carter Jr. added 18 points and 12 rebounds, Franz Wagner scored 19 points and Jalen Suggs pitched in 15 points in his hometown for the Magic in their rally motivated by a lopsided loss to the Wolves last month when they fell behind by 30 points. Rudy Gobert had 22 points and 16 rebounds and Anthony Edwards scored 22 points for the Wolves, whose NBA -leading scoring defense has been hindered at times by an underperforming offense. This was another example of ill-timed turnovers and ill-advised shots, as the Wolves had just 18 points in the fourth quarter. The Wolves fell back into a tie for first place in the Western Conference at 34-15 with the Oklahoma City Thunder with the defending NBA champion Denver Nuggets and Los Angeles Clippers hot on their heels too. The Timberwolves host Houston on Sunday.

(UND) – The North Dakota men’s basketball team defeated South Dakota 95-81 Thursday night, winning for the fifth straight game and winning in Vermillion in back-to-back years for the first time since 1998 & 1999. B.J. Omot led the team with 25 points, joined by Tyree Ihenacho who scored 21. The duo also went over 20 against Oral Roberts last month. Treysen Eaglestaff got the scoring going with the first basket of the game and ten of the first 16 points for the Fighting Hawks. The half went back and forth as each team had scoring spurts, which prevented either team from pulling away. With the game tied at 30 with 2:52 left in the half, NoDak finished the half on a 7-0 run, with Omot hitting from downtown and then scoring a layup and Kuljuhovic closed the half with a jumper to make it a 37-30 lead at intermission. In the opening ten minutes of the second half, the Coyotes pulled within four at 39-35; but the Fighting Hawks repelled the hosts with a 7-0 run. Kuljuhovic scored all seven points in the spurt as UND went back up double-digits at 11. With 8:45 to go, it was a five point game at 65-60 but Omot hit from downtown to stop the momentum that was swinging back to the home team. Each time that the Coyotes made a push, the green and white had an answer to close out the 14 point win. WOLVES-ALL STARS

NEW YORK (AP) — Kawhi Leonard and Paul George of the Los Angeles Clippers were chosen as All-Star reserves Thursday, while the Minnesota Timberwolves and New York Knicks also had two players selected. Anthony Edwards and Karl-Anthony Towns of the Western Conference-leading Timberwolves will be going to the Feb. 18 game in Indianapolis. Stephen Curry is an All-Star for the 10th time, while the Lakers’ Anthony Davis and Devin Booker of Phoenix rounded out the West reserves. Jalen Brunson was selected for the first time and was joined by teammate Julius Randle from the Knicks, who went 14-2 in January. The East had two other first-time selections in Philadelphia’s Tyrese Maxey and Orlando’s Paolo Banchero, with Cleveland’s Donovan Mitchell and Boston’s Jaylen Brown joining them.

The West is the far more experienced squad. Curry tied Hall of Famer Paul Arizin’s Warriors franchise record for most selections, while Davis and George — who will be returning to his original NBA home in Indiana — are All-Stars for the ninth time. Leonard is a six-time selection. The starters were announced last week. Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard will be joined in the East by Philadelphia’s Joel Embiid, Boston’s Jayson Tatum and Indiana guard Tyrese Haliburton. The West starters are the Lakers’ LeBron James, Denver’s Nikola Jokic and Kevin Durant of Phoenix in the frontcourt, along with guards Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of Oklahoma City and Luka Doncic of Dallas. The reserves were selected through voting by head coaches in each conference. They had to choose three frontcourt players, two guards and two other players, regardless of position.

The NBA-leading Celtics and Timberwolves both hoped to have three All-Stars, but neither Boston’s Derrick White nor Minnesota center Rudy Gobert were chosen. The Wolves had to settle for having two All-Stars for the fifth time in franchise history, the first since Towns and Jimmy Butler in 2018. If any players are injured and can’t play, their replacement is chosen by Commissioner Adam Silver. Randle is likely out because of a dislocated right shoulder that is expected to sideline him through the All-Star break.

MSU WOMENS HOCKEY

JAMESTOWN, N.D. (MSU) – In the first of two postponed games from mid-January, the Minot State women’s hockey team quickly returned to the ice for a weekday clash with Jamestown. It was the final road game of the regular season for the Beavers, with an opportunity to head into the last five home games strong. Minot State (15-10-0) continues to have Jamestown’s number, as they defeated the Jimmies (12-10-0) by a final score of 4-1. The Beavers jumped up to an early 2-0 lead in the first period, as they wasted no time to bury Jamestown in a multi-goal deficit. Minot took charge with two goals in a 36-second span, including one on the power play in the first period of action. The middle frame remained scoreless, as period three started the same with the Beavers up 2-0. With seven minutes gone in the third, the Jimmies showed signs of life after cutting the lead in half. That momentum was quickly silenced after the Beavers got back up to two scores nearly a couple minutes later. Minot would secure the nail in the coffin within the final four minutes of regulation to win 4-1 on the road. A key team stat stands out from the night: in all four goals, 11 players recorded a point. The Beaver offense continues to share the wealth amongst the roster. Getting the party started was Olivia Opheim scoring her fifth goal of the season in a two-point performance. Krissy Rink swiftly put in her team-leading eighth goal on the power play that was assisted by Opheim. After Jamestown responded, Kaitlyn Snyder grabbed a huge goal to put the Beaves back in control. Her fourth of the year was followed by Gillian Gervin getting her sixth to put a cap on the scoring. Haylie Biever was stout in net as the starter for Minot. She turned down 24 of 25 shots from Jamestown in the win. The Beavers picked up their fifth win of the season versus Jamestown and 14th in the all-time series. Both squads will meet again next Wednesday on February 7 to complete the rescheduled series. However, the week does not stop there for Minot State. They will play again three days later to reignite an old high-profile matchup from the ACHA division two era with Assiniboine Community College. Two games at Maysa Arena versus the Cougars are scheduled for February 10 and 11.

MSU FOOTBALL-SCHEDULE

MINOT, N.D. (MSU) – A familiar foe that hasn’t seen the turf at First Western Bank Field at Herb Parker Stadium in quite some time provides an early-season, exciting highlight for the Beavers who are pleased to announce their 2024 football schedule. A rivalry dating back to the second season of Beaver football back in 1926 is renewed after a 14-year hiatus as Minot State kicks off the 2024 season by hosting the Valley City State Vikings on Thursday night, August 29, at 6 p.m. The Beavers’ battle with the Vikings is the oldest rivalry in Minot State football history and the Beavers hold the all-time series edge, 44-31-3, which includes a 34-3 Minot State victory at home on Sept. 25, 2010 – the team’s last head-to-head meeting. The renewed rivalry kicks off an 11-game slate for the Beavers that features 10 NSIC contests and six home games for Minot State at First Western Bank Field at Herb Parker Stadium.

After kicking off the season by renewing a non-conference rivalry, the Beavers hunker down for the tough NSIC race as they head to Southwest Minnesota State on September 7 to kick off league play. Back home the next weekend, it will be another exciting edition of Beaver football at “The Herb” as Minot State hosts Northern State on Saturday, September 14, for homecoming. Week four of the season has the Beavers back on the road as they play at Minnesota State, Mankato on September 21 before returning home to close out September on Saturday the 28th hosting Sioux Falls. October begins with Minot State back on the road playing at Wayne State on October 5 before reigning NSIC Champion Augustana heads to The Magic City on Saturday, October 12, to play the Beavers at First Western Bank Field at Herb Parker Stadium. Minot State then hits the road for two straight weekends, closing out the away portion of its schedule with “The Battle of the Beavers” on October 19 at Bemidji State, then Minot State plays at Minnesota Duluth on October 26. That means November is all at home for the Beavers who host Minnesota State Moorhead on Saturday, November 2, then after a bye week, Minot State wraps up the 2024 regular season by hosting Winona State on Saturday, November 16. Kick-off for Minot State’s NSIC games are tentatively scheduled for 2 p.m., but game times are subject to change.

TIMBERWOLVES-MAVS

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Karl-Anthony Towns had 29 points and nine rebounds for the Minnesota Timberwolves in a 121-87 victory over the depleted Dallas Mavericks, who played Wednesday night without stars Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving. Rudy Gobert scored 17 points and Naz Reid added 12 points for the West-leading Wolves (34-14). They endured a sluggish start until Towns sparked their surge with two 3-pointers in the last 35 seconds of the first half to give them the lead for good. Towns, who had 11 points in the third quarter, went 4 for 6 from 3-point range and is shooting a career-best 44.2% from deep. Doncic (sprained right ankle) and Irving (sprained right thumb) both sat for the third game this season, and the Mavericks have lost all three. They’ve played without at least one of them 26 times in 48 games. Josh Green had 18 points and Tim Hardaway Jr. added 14 points for the Mavericks. They shot just 6 for 29 from 3-point range against the NBA’s best scoring defense. This was the fewest points allowed by the Wolves this season. Anthony Edwards, who was fined $40,000 by the league earlier in the day for criticizing the officiating in Oklahoma City, had a quiet nine points for the Wolves without a single shot attempt after the first quarter. Mike Conley, who missed four of the previous five games with left hamstring soreness, returned to action with 10 points in 25 minutes. His 3-pointer early in the fourth quarter capped a 22-3 run.
