MINOT, ND (minotauroshockey.com) – On Saturday night, the Tauros fell 5-2 to the Bobcats despite outshooting Bismarck 29-28 at the Pepsi Rink at the Maysa Arena. Late in the first period, the Bobcats opened the scoring as Kai Dunits led the Bobcats on a 2-on-1 rush and buried the rebound from his initial shot. Less than four minutes into the second period, the Tauros tied it up on the power play. With Heath Nelson in the box for tripping, the Tauros had sustained offensive pressure and good puck rotation. Niklas Ketonen carried the puck into the high slot before dishing it out to a wide-open Jack O’Hanisain at the top of the faceoff circle. He one-timed the pass through traffic and into the back of the net. It was Ketonen’s 34th assist of the season and Rylan Jockims picked up his 25th assist as well. The Bobcats retook the lead just before the halfway point in the period. Mathieu Bourgault got behind the Tauros defense on a breakaway courtesy of a long stretch pass from Landon Fandel that he banked off the wall. Bourgault was able to slip the puck five-hole on Tauros goalie Lukas Swedin as he appeared to cut toward the far post. With less than three minutes remaining in the period, Tommy Cronin extended the Bobcats’ lead to two after he flipped a puck out front that took a wicked bounce that found the back of the net. The Tauros found some life thanks to Ian Engel going to the box for slashing. Again, O’Hanisain capped off a nice sequence on the power play. John Small cut down the left-wing wall before finding O’Hanisain camped at the top of the Bobcat crease. O’Hanisain got his stick on the pass and redirected it just inside the far post. That was O’Hanisain’s second goal of the night and his 29th of the season. Small added his 23rd assist of the season, and Joel Lehtinen picked up his 36th. Just before the whistle blew on the second, Jacob Ingstrup got called for checking from behind that put the Tauros down a man heading into the third. That proved important as the Bobcats pounced only 28 seconds into the third with Kade Kohanski making it 4-2 on the power play. The Tauros had two more cracks at the man advantage, including a long power play as Kohanski was assessed a five-minute major and a game misconduct for elbowing with 11:27 gone in the third. Unfortunately, the Tauros could not solve Bobcats goalie Stephen Peck again, and the Bobcats made it 5-2 with an empty-net goal by Kyle Doll with 57 seconds remaining. Next up? The Robertson Cup Playoffs. As the Central Division champions, the Tauros will be at home to open the playoffs on Friday April 19th.

MINOT STATE BASEBALL
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (MSU) – Jonah Prokott set the tone on the hill and Ricky Apodaca and Brent Riddle provided some big swings at the plate as the Minot State baseball team rallied in the nightcap of its NSIC doubleheader for a 9-3 win over Sioux Falls. The win gave the Beavers (10-23 overall, 7-16 NSIC) a split on the day as the Cougars (20-14, 13-11) took the opener, 8-3. The two teams play a single game Sunday at noon in Sioux Falls to wrap up their weekend series.
GAME 1 | Sioux Falls 8, Minot State 3
Senior Craig Schmich was mowing people down on Saturday, striking out eight Sioux Falls hitters over five innings of work, but it was not enough as the Minot State Beavers fell to the Cougars 8-3. In addition to his eight strikeouts, Schmich (2-6) went five innings, giving up seven runs, all of them earned, on nine hits and walking none for Minot State. Freshman Conner Meldrim also made an impact on the mound for the Beavers, throwing one inning, giving up one run on no hits, with one walk and one strikeout. In the batter’s box, the Beavers were paced by senior Ricky Apodaca, who went 1-for-3 on the day with a home run, a walk and an RBI. Sophomore Noah Madas compiled a standout effort as well, going 1-for-3 with two RBI. Junior Brent Riddle also helped out for Minot State, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding a double. Trailing 4-0, the Beavers first put runs on the board in the fourth inning. Minot State scored twice in the inning, including one on a solo shot from Apodaca. The Beavers deficit grew to 7-2 before their offense got back on the scoreboard, cutting into that deficit in the sixth inning. Apodaca came across to score the lone run of the inning for Minot State on a Noah Madas RBI ground ball, which brought the score to 7-3 in favor of the Cougars. The Beavers were unable to get any closer, as Sioux Falls added one run to their tally on the way to an 8-3 final.
GAME 2 | Minot State 9, Sioux Falls 3
The Minot State Beavers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning and never surrendered the advantage on the way to a 9-3 victory over the Sioux Falls Cougars on Saturday. Sophomore Jonah Prokott (2-1) started on the mound and picked up the win for Minot State. The right-hander went five shutout innings while giving up four hits, allowing no walks and striking out three. Senior Cameron Bagshaw also made an impact on the mound for the Beavers, throwing 2.2 shutout innings while allowing two hits, with no walks and two strikeouts. The Beavers got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the top of the first inning. Minot State got on the board thanks to senior Mark Ossanna’s RBI double with two outs. The Cougars failed to push any runs across before the Beavers built on their lead in the fourth inning. The Minot State offense exploded for four runs, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of senior Ricky Apodaca, which brought the score to 5-0 in favor of the Beavers. Sioux Falls narrowed Minot State’s lead to 5-3 before the Beavers stretched the advantage to 6-3 in the seventh inning. The Beavers scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Ossanna. Minot State held the Cougars scoreless before expanding their lead in the ninth inning. The inning resulted in three runs for the Beavers, all of them scoring on a three-run homer off the bat of junior Brent Riddle to left, bringing the score to 9-3 in favor of Minot State. The score remained 9-3 for the rest of the game, as the Beavers coasted to the win.

MINOT STATE SOFTBALL
MINOT, N.D. (MSU) – Anna LaCount’s sacrifice fly to centerfield provided the walk-off game winner in the eighth inning to start the day and fueled a sweep by the Minot State softball team of NSIC-leading Concordia, St. Paul in a conference doubleheader Saturday at the SCHEELS Complex at South Hill. LaCount’s game-winning fly ball lifted the Beavers (17-11 overall, 12-4 NSIC) to a 2-1 win in the first game and handed the Golden Bears (32-8, 14-2) their first league loss. Riding the momentum of the opening upset, Minot State completed the sweep leading the entire second game in a 7-5 victory. Minot State looks to continue its winning ways Sunday as the Beavers hosts Winona State (26-14, 10-4) in another NSIC doubleheader at the SCHEELS Complex at South Hill starting at 11 a.m.
GAME 1 | Minot State 2, Concordia, Saint Paul 1, 8 innings
The Minot State Beavers needed eight innings to finish the job, but earned the 2-1 extra-innings win, walking it off with sophomore Anna LaCount at the plate to claim victory over the Concordia-Saint Paul Golden Bears Saturday. Junior Reegan Floyd (6-4) got the win for Minot State. The right-hander went eight innings, giving up one run on nine hits, allowing no walks and striking out one. The Beavers were trailing 1-0 in the fourth inning when they first put runs on the board. Senior Gabi Dawyduk put Minot State on the board with a one-out solo home run off junior Erica McCullough. The game remained tied until the bottom of the eighth, when Minot State walked it off when senior Brooklyn Morrison came across to score.
GAME 2 | Minot State 7, Concordia, Saint Paul 5
Sophomore Anna LaCount and senior Lauryn DeGuzman each racked up three hits to help power the Minot State Beavers over the Concordia, Saint Paul Golden Bears 7-5 on Saturday. Senior Gabi Dawyduk (6-5) got the win for Minot State. The right-hander went seven innings, giving up five runs, four earned, on eight hits, allowing one walk and striking out two. In addition to her three hits, DeGuzman had a triple to lead the Beavers. LaCount added a double and an RBI to her three-hit performance as well. Senior Brooklyn Morrison also helped out for Minot State, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding a walk and an RBI. The Beavers got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the bottom the first inning with the game still scoreless. Minot State got on the board thanks to LaCount’s RBI double with two outs. The Golden Bears failed to push any runs across before the Beavers offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning. Sophomore Paige Kellogg came across to score the lone run of the inning for Minot State, which brought the score to 2-0 in favor of the Beavers. Minot State held Concordia, Saint Paul scoreless before expanding their lead to 4-0 the following inning. Morrison’s run-scoring single highlighted a two-run output in the frame for the Beavers. The Golden Bears fought back, closing the gap to 4-3 until Minot State added some insurance in the fourth. Sophomore Sara Van Wickler crossed home plate with the lone run of the inning for the Beavers on a Taylor Smith sacrifice fly, bringing the score to 5-3 in favor of Minot State. The Beavers held Concordia, Saint Paul scoreless before expanding their lead to 7-3 in the sixth inning. Minot State brought home a pair, with one run driven in by LaCount’s single. Concordia, Saint Paul put two runs on the scoreboard before the game was over, but the Beavers still held on for the 7-5 win.

MINOT STATE WOMENS BASKETBALL-COACH
MINOT, N.D. (MSU) – The Beaver women’s basketball program has a new leader, and it’s a familiar face from just a few hours down the road. Minot State’s Vice President for Student Affairs and Intercollegiate Athletics, Kevin Harmon, announced Friday that Ryan Clark has accepted the position of head women’s basketball coach for the Beavers and will begin his duties leading the program starting Monday. Clark spent the last two seasons as the head women’s basketball coach and assistant athletic director at Lake Region State College in Devil’s Lake, North Dakota, just 125 miles down the road, but before that he spent two seasons as an assistant coach for the Minot State women’s basketball team (2019-21). Over the past two seasons at Lake Region, Clark guided the Royals to back-to-back 20-12 seasons which included an upset of No. 21-ranked North Dakota State College of Science, 87-85, during the 2022-23 season and a trip to the Region XIII semifinals that year. Prior to taking over leadership of the Royals, Clark spent one season with NSIC rival Northern State as an assistant coach after his two seasons as an assistant in Minot. He began his collegiate coaching career at Dickinson State where he was an assistant for the men’s basketball program for the 2018-19 season. That experience at Minot State, the experience of coaching in the NSIC, and recruiting and coaching within North Dakota and the region all will be of great benefit to the Beavers’ new coach. A native of Adelaide, Australia, coach Clark began his collegiate playing career at Lake Region State College before playing and earning his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Dickinson State in 2018. Clark earned his Master’s in Sports Management from Minot State in 2020 while an assistant coach for the Beavers. He returns to Minot with his wife, Sheridan, and their son, Finn.

TWINS-TIGERS
DETROIT (AP) — Edouard Julien and Willi Castro homered and the Minnesota Twins beat the Detroit Tigers 4-1 in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday. Minnesota used a seven-run 12th inning to win the first game 11-5. The Tigers struck out 27 times in the doubleheader and 42 times in a 24-hour span including Friday’s rain-delayed 8-2 win. Simeon Woods-Richardson (1-0) allowed one run on two hits and a walk in six innings in the second game. Cole Sands pitched the final 2 1/3 innings for his first save of the season and the second of his career. The first game went to extra innings thanks to an 8th-inning pinch hit homer by Ryan Jeffers. Jorge Alcala (1-0) got the win, allowing two runs in two innings. Tigers starter Kenta Maeda allowed two runs — one earned — on five hits in six innings against his old team. Minnesota’s Joe Kelly struck out a career-high 12 batters in six innings but gave up three runs — one earned — on six hits and a walk.

WILD-SHARKS
SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Liam Ohgren scored his first career goal and the Minnesota Wild beat San Jose 6-2 on Saturday night to assure the Sharks of having the best odds to win the NHL draft lottery. Ohgren, a first-round pick from the 2022 draft, made his NHL debut on Friday night in Las Vegas and delivered in a big way in his second career game. He had an assist in the first period and then scored late in the second when Jonas Brodin’s point shot ricocheted right to Ohgren, who knocked it past Mackenzie Blackwood to make it 3-1. Kirill Kaprizov added two goals in the final minute of the second period for the Wild, who were eliminated from playoff contention Tuesday night. Matt Boldy, Declan Chisholm and Marcus Johansson also scored for Minnesota. Jesper Wallstedt made 27 saves to get his second career win. The Wild play at Los Angeles on Monday night.
