TORONTO (AP) — Carlos Santana hit a three-run home run, Bailey Ober matched his career high by striking out 10 over 6 1/3 shutout innings and the Minnesota Twins won for the 17th time in 20 games by beating the Toronto Blue Jays 5-1 on Sunday. The Twins have won six consecutive series for the first time since September 2010. Santana homered for the third straight game north of the U.S. border, extending Minnesota’s streak of games in Toronto with at least one home run to 20. The Twins homered in 21 straight games at Kansas City between July 30, 1998, and Aug. 25, 2001. Max Kepler added a two-run double for the Twins, extending his career-best hitting streak to 14 games. The game was scoreless until Kepler reached on a one-out fielding error by Blue Jays third baseman Ernie Clement in the seventh inning. Willi Castro followed with a single and Alex Kirilloff grounded into a fielder’s choice before Santana drilled his seventh home run on a 2-0 pitch from Blue Jays right-hander Alek Manoah. The Twins are off today.

TIMBERWOLVES-NUGGETS

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Denver Nuggets were far from done after dropping the first two games of the Western Conference semifinals at home in humbling fashion. Nikola Jokic scored 16 of his 35 points in the fourth quarter, and Aaron Gordon had 27 points on 11-for-12 shooting to propel the Nuggets to a series-tying 115-107 victory over the Timberwolves on Sunday night in Game 4 . Jamal Murray had 12 of his 19 points in the third quarter for the derfending champion Nuggets in a momentum carryover from his buzzer-beating swish from behind half court, and the Wolves only had the deficit below double digits in the second half for a total of 3:19. Anthony Edwards scored 44 points in another spectacular performance for Minnesota that set the franchise postseason record, shooting 16 for 25. But despite a 42-31 rebounding edge, the Wolves were beaten at their own game for the second straight time at home. The series goes back to Denver for Game 5 on Tuesday night.

MINOT, ND – The Minot Minotauros are NAHL’s Central Division champion after beating the Bobcats 3-1 in Game 4 of the division finals in Bismarck on Saturday. Nicholas Sewecke gave the Tauros a 1-0 lead after the first period. Trevor Stachowiak made it 2-1 through two periods. John Small added a third goal in the third period. Lukas Swedin stopped 27 of 28 Bobcat shots. Minot hoists their second Central Cup in franchise history and secured their spot in the Robertson Cup Semi-Finals, which will start next weekend in Blaine, Minnesota. Minot will be the #2-seed and take on #3-seed Maryland in a best-of-three series. Game one is Friday at 7:30 PM at Fogerty Arena in Blaine.

MINOT STATE TRACK & FIELD

MANKATO, Minn. (MSU) – One day after teammate Jasiah Hambira stole the show for Minot State at the NSIC Outdoor Track & Field Championships, it was Ramon Duran’s turn on Saturday. While Duran missed out on the triple-feat accomplished by Hambira of a title, a record, and an NCAA mark, he came within one place of that accomplishment as he doubled up with an NCAA qualifying mark and an all-time Minot State record as runner-up in the men’s 400-meter hurdles at the Championships hosted by Minnesota State, Mankato that concluded Saturday. Duran finished second only to Anthony Collins of MSU, Mankato as the Beaver junior clocked a time of 52.53 seconds in Saturday’s event finals, a career best that also is an NCAA qualifying time that currently ranks him No. 30 in the nation.

Also an All-NSIC performance, as the top 3 finishers in an individual event earn All-NSIC honors, Duran’s race also broke the all-time Minot State record in the event of 52.68 seconds run in 2015 by Tyler Flatland. The Mavericks’ Collins won the event on Saturday in 50.75. Duran’s hurdles effort was one of two records and All-NSIC honors he brought home as he also was part of the Beavers’ 4×400-meter relay quartet that finished second on Saturday to earn All-NSIC honors for Duran, Devontae Daley, Zaccharius Brown, and Hambira. The Beavers finished second in 3:14.78. MSU, Mankato won the relay in 3:12.05.

Minot State’s quartet broke the all-time school record of 3:15.44 run in 1998 by Gabe Iverson, Mike Lunn, Keith Jorgenson, and Trevor Sinclair. The pair of runner-up finishes helped rack up the team points for the Minot State men who finished 10th with 31 points. The Beaver women also added points to their team total on Saturday and finished 12th with 10 points. Host Minnesota State, Mankato won both team titles.

Adding to those awesome performances were middle-distance runners Sidra Sadowsky in the women’s 800 meters, and Peyton Tuhy and Daley in the men’s 800 as all three turned in top-8 finishes and scored for the Beavers. Sadowsky finished 8th in the women’s 800 in a career-best and NCAA Division II school-record time of 2:13.64. She broke her own previous D-II record of 2:16.57 run last season. Tuhy finished 7th in a career-best 1:55.14 in the men’s 800 and Daley was 8th in 1:55.64. Adding another stellar performance on the day was the women’s 4×100 relay team of Summer Krebsbach, De’Andre Cornwall, Tandy Plainichek, and Autumn Wright who broke the all-time school record with a 6th-place finish in 47.76 seconds. The Beaver quartet broke the record of 48.41 run by Sienna Dailey, Allie Helterbran, Dijah Nash, and Mary Roy in 2014.

MINOTAUROS

MINOT, ND – The Minot Minotauros suffered their first playoff loss of the season on Friday as Kyle Doll scored in overtime and the Bobcats defeated the Tauros 4-3 in Bismarck. Minot led after one period on a goal by Adam Mahler. Bismarck came out of the first intermission and scored three straight before the Tauros responded on tallies by Marray Marvin-Cordes and Trevor Stachowiak. No one scored in the third period, so it went to the extra session where Bismarck would get the win 6:16 into the period. Brady James made 35 saves on 39 attempts by the Cats. Minot leads the best-of-five Central Division Final series 2-1. The Tauros will try to close it out tonight in game four at the VFW Sports Center in Bismarck at 7:15 pm.

MINOT STATE TRACK & FIELD

MANKATO, Minn. (MSU) – It’s been a debut season to remember, one that just keeps getting better and better for Jasiah Hambira who also keeps getting better and better. Minot State’s freshman jumper, who has broken records all year in the high jump, broke the NSIC record in the event and won his first NSIC Championship with a new career-best effort at the NSIC Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday hosted by Minnesota State, Mankato. Clearing 6 feet, 8.75 inches and 6-9.75 on his first attempt at each height, Hambira distanced himself from the field, then on his third attempt at 7 feet, 0.25 inches, he cleared the bar breaking his own all-time outdoor Minot State record in the event, the NSIC record, and winning his first NSIC Championship. That winning performance broke the NSIC record of 7-feet-even set by Brian Rabenberg of Minnesota State Moorhead way back in 1988. It also broke Hambira’s own all-time outdoor school record of 6-11.75 from last month and is an NCAA qualifying mark that ranks the Beaver freshman No. 11 in the nation currently. The NCAA National Championships will be hosted by Emporia State in Kansas, May 23-25, and Hambira is now poised for a first-ever invitation to nationals. Hambira also becomes only the second Beaver high jumper to eclipse 7 feet, joining Zach Ryan who holds the all-time indoor Minot State record as he cleared 7-1.5 in 2010.

While Hambira’s win set the tone, he was one of two Beavers who earned All-NSIC honors with a stellar performance Friday, and one of three who scored points on the second day of competition. Adding a day to remember was sophomore distance runner Nicole Reeves who earned All-NSIC honors with a top 3 finish in the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase as she crushed her own all-time best performance in the event and placed 3rd in 11 minutes, 7.56 seconds – more than 18 seconds faster than her previous best and a performance that will be remembered at Minot State as the fastest ever as she broke the all-time record of 11:21.03 run by Samantha Huether in 2018. Reeves finished third behind NSIC champion Eleni Lovgren of Augustana (10:58.11) and runner-up Mary Goodwin of Bemidji State (11:04.02).

While Hambira and Reeves brought home special honors, the Beavers also got a podium finish and points from senior thrower Samuel Kreins in the shot put as he placed 7th in the event with a throw of 52 feet, 5.25 inches. Tyler Hiatt of Sioux Falls won the event with a mark of 57-7. The points earned by Hambira and Kreins have the Minot State men sitting in 10th place as a team with 12 points after seven of 21 scoring events. On the women’s side, Reeves’ performance scored the Minot State women 6 points as the Beaver ladies are 11th through seven scored events. And the Beavers are poised to add more to their score – and maybe a few more titles and All-NSIC honors after strong showings in several preliminary events Friday.

Another potential Minot State champion is hurdler Ramon Duran who clocked the second-fastest time in the prelims in the men’s 400-meter hurdles with a time of 53.72 for a spot in Saturday’s finals. Also advancing to a final on the men’s side are Peyton Tuhy and Devontae Daley who both advanced in the 800 meters as Tuhy clocked a prelim time of 1:57.52 and Daley a 1:59.03. Tuhy’s time was fourth fastest on Friday and Daley ninth best. On the women’s side, both Sidra Sadowsky and De’Andre Cornwall raced their way into a spot in Saturday’s finals as Sadowsky was 6th fastest in the prelims in the 800 meters in 2:17.29 and Cornwall was 6th fastest in the prelims in the 100-meter hurdles in 14.16. Today’s final day of competition gets underway at 11 a.m.

TIMBERWOLVES-NUGGETS

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Denver Nuggets were simply too determined, too experienced, too proud and too talented to let their flop in the first two games define this series against the surging Minnesota Timberwolves. This is what defending NBA champions do — quiet a raucous crowd, embrace the boos and take the momentum right back. Jamal Murray rebounded from a rough start to the Western Conference semifinals with 24 points to lead the Nuggets on a 117-90 romp Friday night in Game 3 that made the Timberwolves the last team in the NBA to lose this postseason. Nikola Jokic, the three-time league MVP, had 24 points, 14 rebounds and nine assists, Michael Porter Jr. scored 21 points and the Nuggets sliced Minnesota’s series lead to 2-1 on the strength of their 14-for-29 shooting from 3-point range. Anthony Edwards had a quiet 19 points to lead the Wolves, who went just 10 for 32 from deep even with a 4-for-5 effort from Karl-Anthony Towns. They failed to get Towns (14 points) enough shots and played slower than they did in the first two games in Denver while falling behind by as many as 34 points. The Nuggets became the 30th team in the history of the NBA playoffs to lose the first two games at home in a best-of-seven series. Five have rallied to win. Game four is Sunday in Minneapolis.

TORONTO (AP) — Carlos Santana hit a tiebreaking home run in the fifth inning, Joe Ryan pitched a season-high seven innings and the Minnesota Twins won for the 16th time in 18 games by beating the Toronto Blue Jays 3-2 on Friday night. Carlos Correa had two hits and scored twice as the Twins won for the ninth time in their past 13 games in Toronto. Jose Miranda added an RBI single as the Twins, who successfully brought their lucky sausage across the Canadian border, extended their road winning streak to seven. Santana was struck on the helmet by the sausage as he returned to the dugout following his home run. Ryan (2-2) allowed one run and six hits for his first victory in three starts. He struck out seven and did not give up a walk. Jhoan Duran worked the eighth and Griffin Jax pitched the ninth for his fifth save in seven chances. Isiah Kiner-Falefa had three hits, including his second home run, but the Blue Jays lost for the sixth time in eight games.

RHP Kevin Gausman (2-3, 3.78 ERA) starts for Toronto today against Twins RHP Simeon Woods Richardson (1-0, 1.74). Gausman has a 6.35 ERA in 11 career games against Minnesota.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Manny Margot highlighted a five-run first inning for Minnesota with a three-run double off Seattle ace Logan Gilbert, and the Twins coasted to an 11-1 victory over the Mariners to win their fifth consecutive series on Thursday afternoon. Pablo López (4-2) pitched into the seventh with a season-high 10 strikeouts to win his third straight start. Ryan Jeffers and Max Kepler each homered and drove in two runs, Jose Miranda scored three runs on two hits and Margot matched his career high with five RBIs for the Twins (22-15), who won for the 15th time in their last 17 games. Gilbert failed to pitch into the sixth for the first time in eight starts this season. The 2018 first-round draft pick gave up eight runs, the most since he was a rookie in 2021, on nine hits and two walks while finishing five innings. The AL-leading ERA of 1.69 he took into the game rocketed up to 2.94. Pablo López gave up one run on four hits without a walk in 6 1/3 innings, which included a slick catch by shortstop Willi Castro of a line drive that first glanced off the third baseman Miranda’s glove.

MINOT STATE TRACK & FIELD

MANKATO, Minn. (MSU) – It’s championship time for the Minot State track and field teams as they head to Minnesota State, Mankato this weekend for the NSIC Outdoor Championships. The Beavers compete Friday and Saturday at the Championships, which begin Thursday with the multi-events. Friday’s action begins at 10 a.m. with the women’s 10,000 meters, and Saturday the women’s javelin gets things started at 11 a.m. At stake will be NSIC titles in each event, the team championships, and All-NSIC honors for the top three individual finishers in each event and top two relay teams. And the Beavers head into the weekend with several student-athletes poised to score team points, compete for All-NSIC honors, and possibly bring home NSIC titles.

Leading the way on the men’s side are freshman high jumper Jasiah Hambira and junior hurdler Ramon Duran. Hambira set the all-time Minot State record this spring in the high jump clearing 6 feet, 11.75 inches, an NCAA qualifying mark that ranks him No. 15 in the nation and 2nd in the NSIC heading into the weekend. The men’s high jump will be contested at 12:30 p.m. on Friday. As for Duran, he heads into this weekend No. 3 in the conference in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 53.44 seconds. Preliminaries for the 400 hurdles will be Friday at 4:40 p.m.

While they are poised for potential All-NSIC honors or a title, lurking in the Top 10 and ready for a big weekend are senior thrower Samiel Kreins, who is 9th in the shot put with a mark of 53 feet, 1 inch headed into the Championships, junior distance runner Gabriel Plummer, who also is 9th in 10,000 meters with a time of 34 minutes, 31.94 seconds, and the men’s 4×400 relay team of Zaccharius Brown, Devontae Daley, Duran, and Hambira who have the 4th-fastest time in the NSIC this spring of 3:16.37, which also is an NCAA Division II Minot State school record.

As for the women, sophomore distance runners Nicole Reeves and Emery Smith, junior hurdler De’Andre Cornwall, a junior middle-distance runner Sidra Sadowsky lead the way as all are in position to score team points for the Beavers and ready to make a run at All-NSIC honors or a title, too. Cornwall set the all-time Minot State record in the 100-meter hurdles with an NCAA qualifying time of 14.12 seconds which ranks her No. 42 in the nation in a highly competitive NSIC event where she is 6th in the league. Reigning NCAA National Champion Denisha Cartwright of MSU, Mankato is No. 1 in the NSIC and nation in the event with a time of 12.71 seconds. The women’s 100 hurdles prelims are at 2 p.m. on Friday. As for Reeves, she heads into the weekend No. 5 in the NSIC in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11 minutes, 25.93 seconds. The women’s steeplechase final is at 12:30 p.m. on Friday. Smith heads into the weekend No. 7 in the league in the 10,000 meters with a time of 39:05.86, and Sadowsky has the No. 10 time in the 800 meters of 2:16.59. The women’s 10,000 final is at 10 a.m. on Friday and the 800-meter prelims are at 3:30 p.m. on Friday.

TWINS-MARINERS

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Carlos Correa and Trevor Larnach hit consecutive home runs for Minnesota in the first inning off Seattle starter George Kirby, and the Twins hung on to beat the Mariners 6-3 and help Chris Paddack win his fourth straight start on Wednesday night. Willi Castro went deep in the second and hit an RBI triple in the fourth that put the Twins in front by three, giving Paddack (4-1) enough fuel to extend his career-long winning streak. The right-hander, who missed most of the previous two seasons recovering from elbow reconstruction, matched his Twins best with 10 strikeouts while pitching into the sixth. He allowed a solo homer to Mitch Garver, the only run against him. The Twins let Paddack throw a season-high 99 pitches, the second-most of his career, before Caleb Thielbar entered for the last two outs in the sixth. Paddack made a point to shake Baldelli’s hand and thank him for the trust.

WOLVES-CONNELLY

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Tim Connelly made his first major move for the Minnesota Timberwolves after about six weeks on the job, a bold get of cenrter Rudy Gobert that was as risky as it was unconventional. Going big has been no small part of this breakthrough season — and dominant start to the playoffs — for the Timberwolves. They take a 2-0 lead over Denver into Game 3 of the second-round series Friday night. “I think when Tim Connelly made that trade, everybody was laughing at him like, ‘What is he doing?’ But he made a great team,” Nuggets center Nikola Jokic said. “I think he deserves the credit for doing that, and of course, the coaching staff are making sure things are working. And I think they are a really dangerous team.”

Jokic and the defending NBA champions knew that well before losing the first two games of this Western Conference semifinal series in humbling fashion to a team, like theirs, that was assembled largely at Connelly’s direction. Over his nine seasons as general manager, the Nuggets found the three-time league MVP Jokic in the second round of the 2014 draft, made good on first-round picks with Jamal Murray (2016) and Michael Porter Jr. (2018) and acquired ace defender Aaron Gordon in a 2021 trade. Connelly also hired Mike Malone as coach in 2015 and watched with pride last summer when his close friend led the club to the franchise’s first title.

After leaving for a new challenge and a big raise to be the president of basketball operations of the long-languishing Timberwolves, Connelly quickly went to work on a roster that featured a dynamic young guard in Anthony Edwards and an athletic big man in Karl-Anthony Towns. The pressing goal of becoming a quality defensive team Connelly shared with his inherited head coach Chris Finch led them to Gobert, who was made available by Utah for the steep price of five first-round draft picks and five players. Never mind that the NBA had become a game driven by athleticism, quickness and long-distance shooting. The Timberwolves were determined to make their pairing of 7-footers work, even after a rough first season for Gobert hampered by the long-term absence of Towns to a severely strained calf muscle. “I just appreciate him believing in himself and his talent and his mind and building this team out for us to have the best chance to win, trusting that we would make this work,” Towns said.

Though his predecessor Gersson Rosas made the call on Edwards with the first overall pick in the 2020 draft that also yielded defensive stalwart Jaden McDaniels, a year after signing an undrafted Naz Reid, Connelly executed another deal that has been vital in this run by acquiring Mike Conley and Nickeil Alexander-Walker for D’Angelo Russell in a three-team swap.

Gobert just won his fourth Defensive Player of the Year award. While he watched from afar to be with his girlfriend for the birth of their son, the Timberwolves stifled and flummoxed the Nuggets in a 106-80 win in Game 2 on Monday. McDaniels, Edwards and Alexander-Walker swarmed the ailing Murray on the perimeter. Towns and Reid made the paint awfully tough for Jokic. The whole league was watching. Former Timberwolves star Kevin Garnett posted on social media that this was the type of defense that could sell tickets, a trail-blazing trait akin to Golden State’s 3-point shooting a decade ago. Jamal Crawford, another former Timberwolves player on the TNT broadcast team, joked during the second quarter that Reid was not supposed to play defense that well as the Sixth Man of the Year award winner.

Just like Connelly and his lieutenants drew it up two years ago? “I could tell you we have these one, three and five-year plans. It’d be a lie,” Connelly said with a laugh before the series began. “In the NBA, there’s fluidity and things you didn’t expect to happen. You look at Denver, we tried to retain some guys we didn’t keep and got very fortunate with Aaron. Every day, especially around the draft or trade deadline and free agency, things change dramatically. We’re really lucky to have these unbelievable talented core pieces and try to build around them and support them.”

The success in Minnesota clearly affirms the value in being patient and sticking to a process, but as for the perceived win for outside-the-box thinking, well, good luck getting Connelly to acknowledge that. “It’s just hypothesis. I’m just guessing. You never know. You make a trade, you sign somebody, you draft somebody, you hope it works,” Connelly said. “So I don’t know. Validation would probably give our group too much credit. But we felt pretty convicted that we had the cultural DNA to be a good team. We thought we had the talent. We knew we had an elite coaching staff. Could we grow up a little bit around the edges? Could we not expose ourselves to so many self-faults and unforced errors? And I think we’ve done that for the most part all season.”

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Josh Rojas and Ty France each hit an RBI single during Seattle’s four-run ninth inning, and the Mariners beat the Minnesota Twins 10-6 on Tuesday night. Cal Raleigh connected for a pinch-hit grand slam in the seventh for Seattle, which has won three of four. Mitch Haniger hit a solo homer in the second and added a sacrifice fly in the ninth. Ryne Stanek (1-0) got two outs for the win after fellow reliever Tayler Saucedo got hurt while covering first base. Andrés Muñoz pitched a scoreless ninth. Minnesota reliever Jorge Alcala (1-1) allowed four runs on four hits, issued two walks and threw a wild pitch during Seattle’s ninth-inning rally. The Twins have lost two of three after their 12-game winning streak. A wild three final innings was highlighted by a clutch swing for Raleigh, who was out of the starting lineup for a rare occasion. Raleigh hit for Seby Zavala against left-hander Steven Okert and drove a hanging slider to the third deck in left at Target Field. Down 6-4 after Raleigh’s homer, Minnesota got a run in the bottom of the seventh and another one in the eighth.

WOLVES-NUGGETS

DENVER (AP) — Denver Nuggets guard Jamal Murray was fined $100,000 by the NBA but avoided a suspension for “throwing multiple objects in the direction of a game official during live play,” the league announced Tuesday. Murray tossed a towel and a heat pack onto the court late in the second quarter of Denver’s 108-80 loss to Minnesota that gave the Timberwolves a 2-0 lead in the Western Conference semifinal series that shifts to Minneapolis this weekend. The Nuggets were frustrated by the officiating as they fell behind by 28 points shortly before halftime. The heat pack toss garnered the most attention as TNT replays showed Murray sitting at the end of Denver’s bench and throwing it onto the court. It slid across the floor as players jockeyed in the lane just before Minnesota’s Karl-Anthony Towns made a layup with 4:41 left in the second quarter. Nuggets guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope retrieved the heat pack and tossed it aside as the public-address announcer admonished the crowd not to throw any objects onto the court.

Officiating crew chief Marc Davis told a pool reporter after the game that the officials were unaware the object had come from the bench. Otherwise, “we could have reviewed it under the hostile act trigger. The penalty would have been a technical foul.” “We tried to impress upon (the officials) that there’s probably not many fans in the building that have a heat pack. So, it probably had to come from the bench,” Wolves coach Chris Finch said after the game. Finch also said Murray’s actions were “inexcusable and dangerous.”

Murray left the arena without speaking to reporters and Nuggets coach Michael Malone demurred when asked about it after the game, saying he wasn’t aware that his point guard had been the culprit. The Nuggets were off Tuesday. Their next availability is after Wednesday’s practice. Several seconds before he threw the heat pack onto the court, Murray was observed tossing a towel in Davis’ direction. The towel landed at Davis’ heels and somebody sitting on the sideline got up and quickly removed the towel. Davis never noticed.

Murray, bothered by a strained left calf and the Timberwolves’ tenacious defense, shot 3 of 18 in Game 2, finishing with eight points. That poor performance came on the heels of his scoreless first half in Game 1, which was the first time he’s done that in either half of 59 career playoff games.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Ceddanne Rafaela hit the first Red Sox home run in seven games, Rafael Devers added another, and Boston ended Minnesota’s 12-game winning streak by beating the Twins 9-2 on Sunday. Vaughn Grissom and Dominic Smith had two-run doubles, and Boston ended a three-game slide in which it scored just four runs. Ryan Jeffers homered and Trevor Larnach had an RBI single for Minnesota. The Twins’ 12-game winning streak was tied for the second-longest in team history behind a 15-win run in June 1991, the last season Minnesota won the World Series. Boston starter Cooper Criswell, who threw five shutout innings in each of his last two starts, allowed one earned run and struck out five in 4 1/3 innings, but needed 80 pitches to do so. Brennan Bernardino (1-1), the first of five Red Sox relievers, earned the win. Tossing his team-high fifth quality start of the season, Joe Ryan (1-2) allowed four hits and three earned runs while striking out five.

The Twins start a four-game home series today with the Mariners. RHP Simeon Woods Richardson (1-0, 2.45) is the scheduled Twins starter against Seattle RHP Luis Castillo (3-4, 3.46).

MINOT, ND – The Minot Minotauros have been unstoppable in the postseason so far, as they secured a comfortable 6-2 win over the Bismarck Bobcats on Saturday. With this victory, they have taken a commanding 2-0 lead in the Central Division Finals. The Tauros led 3-0 after one period with a pair of goals by Cayden Casey and a tally by Nicholas Sewecke. Sewecke added his second of the night in the second period and Niklas Ketonen lit the lamp also as Minot led 5-1 at the end of two. Sewecke would complete the hat-trick early in the third period. Lukas Swedin made 23 saves for the Tauros. Up next, the Tauros head to Bismarck on Friday for Game 3 at the VFW Sports Center with a chance to close out the Central Division Finals.

MINOT STATE BASEBALL

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (MSU) – It was a disappointing end to the baseball season for the Beavers on the road Saturday afternoon as Minot State struggled, falling to the No. 12 Augustana Vikings 12-2 despite the efforts of senior Ricky Apodaca, who went 1-for-3 with a double. Sophomore Jonah Prokott (4-2) started and took the loss on the mound for Minot State (15-34 overall, 12-27 NSIC), which saw its season come to an end with the loss. Senior Noah Balandran was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going one shutout inning without allowing a hit, walking none and striking out one. Trailing 10-0, the Beavers first put runs on the board in the fifth inning. Minot State managed to push across two runs in the inning as Miles Iverson and Brent Riddle each had an RBI. The Beavers were unable to get any closer, as Augustana added two runs to their tally on the way to a 12-2 final.

MINOT STATE SOFTBALL-HONORS

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (MSU) – A strong run at the NSIC Softball Tournament earned a pair of Beaver players All-Tournament Team honors as the league wrapped up its postseason action Saturday. Minot State third baseman Hannah Murray and outfielder Sara Van Wickler each were honored as they were named to the NSIC Softball All-Tournament Team following Saturday’s title game, a 9-0 win by Augustana over Minnesota Duluth. Murray was 4-for-7 at the plate with a double and two runs scored, and she also stole a base for Minot State, which went 2-1 in the tournament and advanced to Friday’s semifinals. Defensively she anchored the Beavers (24-19 overall) with four putouts and nine assists without an error in three games. Van Wickler led the offense going 5-for-10 with three doubles, a home run, and a team-best four RBIs in three games, while also scoring two runs and stealing a base. She also contributed three putouts and an assist from the outfield defensively.

MINOT, ND (MINOTAUROSHOCKEY.COM) – The Minot Minotauros welcomed the Bismarck Bobcats to the Pepsi Rink at Maysa Arena to start the Central Division Finals but were anything but gracious hosts in a 5-2 win. The Tauros extended their winning streak over their rivals to 7-0 in the playoffs. Jack O’Hanisain and John Small led the way for the Tauros with two goals apiece while Weston Knox had two assists. John Emmons scored the first goal of the game late in the first period. Brady James made 24 saves on 26 Bobcat shots. Game two is tonight at 7:35 pm at Maysa Arena.

MINOT STATE BASEBALL

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (MSU) – Brent Riddle led the way with a pair of RBIs in the opener while Ricky Apodaca and Noah Madas each drove in a pair of runs in the nightcap, but it wasn’t enough as the Minot State baseball team dropped both games of an NSIC doubleheader to host Augustana late Friday. The Beavers (15-33 overall, 12-26 NSIC) fell 15-2 win in the first game and lost 13-6 in the nightcap to the Vikings. The two teams meet in a single game at 1 p.m. today in the season finale for Minot State.

GAME 1 | No. 12 Augustana 15, Minot State 2

Junior Brent Riddle put together an outstanding outing at the plate Friday, hitting two home runs, but the Minot State Beavers fell to the No. 12 Augustana Vikings 15-2. Senior Craig Schmich (2-9) got the ball to start for Minot State and took the loss. Freshman Conner Meldrim was a bright spot for the Beavers, coming out of the bullpen and throwing one inning, giving up two runs, zero earned, on one hit, with no walks and two strikeouts. Riddle went 2-for-3 at the plate, supplementing his two home runs with two RBIs. Senior Mark Ossanna added to Riddle’s awesome power-hitting performance by going 1-for-2 with a double along with one walk. The Beavers got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the top of the first inning. Riddle put Minot State on the board with a one-out solo home run off sophomore Ashton Michek. The Vikings then rallied to score three runs and take a 3-1 lead before the Beavers got back on the board in the fourth. Minot State picked up a run on Riddle’s leadoff home run off of Michek, which tightened the Vikings lead to 3-2. The Beavers were unable to get any closer, as Augustana added 12 runs to their tally on the way to a 15-2 final.

GAME 2 | No. 12 Augustana 13, Minot State 6

Sophomore Colton Bagshaw racked up three hits, but the Minot State Beavers fell to the No. 12 Augustana Vikings 13-6 Friday. Senior Trevyn Badger (1-7) got the ball to start for Minot State and took the loss. Freshman Ayden Sauerbrei was a bright spot for the Beavers, coming out of the bullpen and throwing 2.2 innings, giving up one run on five hits, with no walks and seven strikeouts. In addition to his three hits, Bagshaw had a double to lead the Beavers. Senior Ricky Apodaca put together a standout day at the dish as well, going 1-for-3 with a double, two walks and two RBI. Sophomore Noah Madas also chipped in for Minot State, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding a double, a walk and two RBI. The Beavers were trailing 4-0 in the third inning when they first put runs on the board. Minot State’s offense started clicking and put up four runs, including a two-run double off the bat of Madas. The Vikings then scored two runs to retake their advantage heading into the fourth inning, when the Beavers responded by getting back on the scoreboard themselves. Minot State pushed across a run on Apodaca’s two-out RBI double, which tightened the Vikings lead to 6-5. Augustana expanded its lead to 9-5 before the Minot State offense got back in action, reducing that lead to 9-6 in the fifth. The Beavers were unable to get any closer, as Augustana added four runs to their tally on the way to a 13-6 final.

MINOT STATE SOFTBALL

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (MSU) – A valiant postseason run by the Beaver softball team came up a few runs short of victory on Friday afternoon. Minot State’s offense was shut down by Minnesota Duluth senior pitcher Lauren Dixon as the Beavers could not push across a run despite totaling five hits as the Bulldogs collected a 2-0 victory in the NSIC Tournament semifinals. Junior Reegan Floyd (10-9) started and took the loss in the circle for Minot State (24-19 overall). The right-hander went six innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on eight hits, allowing one walk and striking out two. With the win, Minnesota Duluth (41-14) advances to Saturday’s NSIC title game and plays Augustana at noon for an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. The loss ends Minot State’s season. Minot State managed one chance with a runner on third in the shutout, going a total of 1-for-3 with runners in scoring position. The Beavers last got a runner on third in the sixth, when junior Hannah Murray made it 60 feet away from scoring with one out. Minnesota Duluth scored a solo run in each of the third and fourth innings, then rode the arm of Dixon, who struck out four in the complete-game win.

UND FOOTBALL-HONOR

TORONTO, Ontario (UND) – Former North Dakota wide receiver and return specialist Weston Dressler will be one of seven Canadian football icons joining the halls of the Canadian Football Hall of Fame (CFHOF) and Museum in 2024, the Canadian Football League (CFL) announced Friday. Dressler will be inducted with fellow CFL all-time receivers S.J. Green and Chad Owens, cornerback Marvin Coleman and defensive end Vince Goldsmith. Coaching legend Ray Jauch and one of Canada’s greatest proponents of touch football, Ed Laverty, will also be inducted into the hall. Over 11 seasons (2008-18), Dressler played in 161 games for the Saskatchewan Roughriders and Winnipeg Blue Bombers. The four-time West Division All-Star and two-time CFL All-Star also appeared in two Grey Cup Championships, capturing Canadian football’s ultimate prize in 2013 in front of his Roughriders’ home crowd.

Dressler played at North Dakota from 2004-07 and earned 14 different All-America honors and was a four-time selection to the All-North Central Conference first team. As a senior in 2007, he became the first player in league history to earn All-NCC first team honors at three different positions (receiver, return specialist and utility) in the same season. He graduated as UND’s all-time leader in virtually every receiving category, including receptions (243), receiving yards (3,382) and touchdown catches (38). Upon graduation, Dressler made an immediate impact in the CFL, taking home Most Outstanding Rookie honors in 2008 with 56 receptions for 1,128 yards and 1,014 punt return yards. He had 715 catches in his career to rank No. 13 all-time in the CFL and his 10,026 total yards sits No. 17 in league history. The former Fighting Sioux football player tallied 65 touchdowns in his career, including five via kick returns. After his historic career with the Roughriders, Dressler was inducted into the SaskTel Plaza of Honour in 2022.

TWINS-RED SOX

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Chris Paddack pitched six scoreless innings to carry the Minnesota Twins to their 11th consecutive victory, a 5-2 decision over the Boston Red Sox on Friday night. The Twins matched win streaks in 2003 and 2006 for their third-longest ever, trailing the club record of 15 straight during its last World Series championship season in 1991. Minnesota won 12 in a row in 1980. The Twins (18-13) also have the longest winning streak in the major leagues this year. There were only four last season of 10-plus games, topped by Tampa Bay’s 13 straight. Edouard Julien hit a two-out RBI single to give Paddack (3-1) a lead in the third, and the lanky, long-haired right-hander took it from there. He allowed two hits, struck out six and walked one in perhaps his finest start with the Twins, who acquired him in a trade with San Diego at the beginning of the 2022 season. He made just five starts that year and was lost to elbow ligament replacement surgery. Red Sox starter Tanner Houck (3-3) completed six innings for the sixth time in seven turns, but he was pulled three batters into the seventh as the Twins broke the game open with a four-run inning.

The Minot State softball team continued its march through the NSIC Tournament on Thursday as the Beavers jumped on top early and rolled to a 5-2 upset of 2nd-seeded Concordia, St. Paul. Sophomore Sara Van Wickler recorded two extra-base hits to help lead Minot State (24-18 overall) over the Golden Bears (37-14) for the third time this season. Junior Reegan Floyd (10-8) started in the circle and picked up the win for Minot State. The right-hander went seven innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on eight hits, allowing no walks and striking out three. Van Wickler’s two extra-base hits were the highlight of a 2-for-4 day that included two doubles and an RBI. Junior Abby Lohse put together a noteworthy day at the plate as well, going 1-for-4 with a home run and an RBI. Senior Taryn Bennett also contributed for the Beavers, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding a triple. The Beavers got on the scoreboard first, starting in the third inning. Senior Lauryn DeGuzman came across to score the lone run of the inning for Minot State on an error and get the Beavers on the board. The Beavers then held the Golden Bears scoreless before expanding their lead in the fifth inning. The Minot State offense exploded for four runs, highlighted by a one-run home run off the bat of Lohse, which brought the score to 5-0 in favor of the Beavers. DeGuzman, Van Wickler, and Brooklyn Morrison also added an RBI each in the rally. Concordia Saint Paul put two runs on the scoreboard before the game was over, but Minot State still held on for the 5-2 win. With the victory, the Beavers advance to the NSIC Tournament semifinals and will play Minnesota Duluth today at 2:30 p.m. for a spot in the title game, and a shot at an automatic berth to the NCAA National Tournament.

NDHSAA DISTINGUISHED STUDENT

JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NDHSAA) – Zack Volson, a junior at Drake-Anamoose High School was named the 2024-2025 North Dakota High School Activities Association and Farmers Union Insurance Distinguished Student. Interviews were held Wednesday, May 1 at Farmers Union Insurance Headquarters in Jamestown. Martin Bergstedt, of Enderlin High School was chosen runner up. The other finalists interviewed were:

The six finalists were selected from applications sent in by high school principals from across the state. The NDHSAA Distinguished Student program was developed to recognize deserving young people who are the “backbone” of interscholastic activities, not necessarily the leader, but the individual whose participation in high school activities strengthens the program for participants, the school and the community. Applicants are students entering their senior year. The student must be a participant as a player, manager, statistician or other role in at least one NDHSAA sponsored activity. The student must be a good citizen and role model to his/her peers as well as a contributor to his/her school and community.

The NDHSAA Distinguished Student recipient receives a Farmers Union Insurance sponsored $2,000 scholarship to the college of his/her choice. The NDHSAA Distinguished Student recipient will also participate in other activities such as serving as the NDHSAA spokesperson for High School Activities Month, promoting the values of activity programs and participating in awarding of trophies at major NDHSAA state contests. The runner-up will receive a $1,000 scholarship of his/her choice and other recognition in connection with NDHSAA events. The other four finalists receive a $500 scholarship to the college of his/her choice, publication in the NDHSAA Bulletin and other recognition in connection with NDHSAA events. All finalists will be featured in the NDHSAA’s “Parade of Champions” Productions shown on statewide television in March.

MINOTAUROS

MINOT, ND – For the first time since the Minot Minotauros joined the North American Hockey League 13 seasons ago they will face Bismarck in the Central Division Final series. The Tauros and Bobcats have met in two previous playoff series, in 2015 and 2019. In both series the Tauros were the two seed in the Central Division playoff bracket and the Cats were the three seed giving the Tauros home-ice advantage. The Tauros swept both series. This year the Tauros will once again have home-ice advantage, this time as the first seed in the Central Division while the Bobcats finished second. The Tauros were 7-3-1 against Bismarck during the 2023-24 regular season with two of the losses coming on the final weekend of the regular season after the Tauros had clinched the Central Division regular season title. The first two games in the best-of-five series are tonight and Saturday here in Minot. Game three, and if necessary, game four are next weekend in Bismarck. A decisive game five would be here in Minot on Monday, May 13th.

Floyd (9-8) went the distance for Minot State (23-18 overall), giving up three hits, walking one and striking out one. At the plate, the Beavers were led by sophomore Sara Van Wickler, who went 2-for-4 on the day with a double, a home run and three RBI. Senior Brooklyn Morrison put together a standout effort as well, going 1-for-2 with a home run and an RBI. Junior Abby Lohse also chipped in for Minot State, putting together three hits in four trips to the plate while adding a double and an RBI. The Beavers took the lead for good in the fifth, scoring for the first time in the inning. Minot State scored three runs in the frame, as Lohse had the game-winning hit, and RBI infield single. Sophomore Anna LaCount’s two-RBI double highlighted the inning. The Beavers then tacked on runs in the sixth inning when they scored four times. The first three came on a three-run home run off the bat of Van Wickler, her first home run of the season. Morrison added her team-leading fourth home run as Van Wickler and Morrison went back-to-back in the four-run inning. With the win, No. 7-seeded Minot State advances to play No. 2 seed Concordia, St. Paul (37-13) today at 3 p.m. in the NSIC quarterfinals. The loss ends the season for Northern State (25-24).

(MSU) – Brian Parry and Ricky Apodaca each hit safely in both games, and Apodaca drove in three runs, but it wasn’t enough as Minot State fell 8-5 and 13-3 to host Bemidji State on Wednesday in the Battle of the Beavers. Parry finished the NSIC doubleheader 4-for-8 and scored three runs while Apodaca was 2-for-7 on the day for Minot State (15-31 overall, 12-24 NSIC), which closes out its regular season on the road Friday and Saturday, playing a doubleheader at Augustana on Friday and a single game against the Vikings on Saturday.

The Beavers got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with three runs in the top of the first inning, highlighted by a two-RBI double from Apodaca. The Beavers lost the lead they built in the first but got back on the board in the seventh trailing 8-3. Minot State picked up two runs when a single from Riddle scored senior Cameron Carr and Parry, which tightened the Bemidji State Beavers lead to 8-5. The ballgame ended with that seventh-inning rally falling short.

GAME 2 | Bemidji State 13, Minot State 3

The Minot State Beavers struggled on Wednesday, falling to the Bemidji State Beavers 13-3 despite the efforts of junior Brian Parry, who went 1-for-4 with a double. Junior Gage Eastlick (1-4) started and took the loss on the mound for Minot State. In the batter’s box, the Beavers were led by Parry, who went 1-for-4 on the day with a double. Senior Ricky Apodaca compiled a noteworthy performance as well, going 1-for-3 with an RBI. The Beavers got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the top of the first inning. Parry came across to score the lone run of the inning for Minot State and get them on the board. The Beavers lost the lead they built in the first but got back on the board in the fourth trailing 3-1. Minot State managed to push across two runs in the inning, one each on RBI groundouts by Grant Gabbert and Noah Madas, which evened the score at 3-3. Bemidji State then scored 10 times over the remaining three innings to break the tie and grab the 13-3 win.

MINOT STATE TRACK & FIELD

BISMARCK, N.D. (MSU) – Summer Krebsbach led the way during another record-setting day for the Minot State track and field teams. The sophomore from Max, North Dakota claimed the newest all-time school record on Wednesday as she broke a 42-year-old mark in the women’s 200 meters at the Marauders-Mystics Tune Up. Finishing 2nd in the event, Krebsbach clocked a new Beaver-best time of 25.38 seconds to shave .01 seconds off the previous record of 25.39 run by Donna Bumann in 1981.

Krebsbach’s record effort was one of three on the day for Minot State which also picked up four wins in the Beavers final tune-up prior to next weekend’s NSIC Championships hosted by Minnesota State, Mankato, May 9-11. Adding NCAA Division II-era school records with their winning performances were De’Andre Cornwall in the women’s 100 meters, and the men’s 4×400-meter relay team of Zaccharius Brown, Devontae Daley, Ramon Duran, and Jasiah Hambira.

Cornwall, who last month set the all-time school record in the women’s 100-meter hurdles, added the D-II record in the 100 dash on Wednesday as she led a sweep of the top four places by the Beavers. Cornwall won in 12.28 seconds, beating the old record of 12.32 run by Ashley Miller in 2022. Right behind their teammate were Camryn Adam’s, who took 2nd in 12.40, Tandy Plainichek, who was 3rd in 12.73, and Autumn Wright, who was 4th in 13.00.

On the men’s side, the Beavers’ 4×400 quartet clocked a winning time of 3 minutes, 16.37 seconds, which ranks No. 4 this season in the NSIC, and broke the previous Minot State D-II era record of 3:18.45 run by Tyler Bates, Alex Cundiff, Tyler Flatland, and Josh Sandy in 2014.

While Krebsbach, Cornwall, and the men’s relay team set records, Macey Moore and Peyton Tuhy each added a victory to the Beavers day on Wednesday. Moore won the women’s 100-meter hurdles in 16.03 seconds, and Tuhy bested the field in the men’s 800 meters in 1:55.85. Wednesday was the final regular season meet for Minot State. The Beavers next compete at the NSIC Championships, May 9-11.

TWINS-WHITE SOX

CHICAGO (AP) — Max Kepler and José Miranda hit run-scoring singles to put Minnesota ahead in the seventh, and the Twins rallied late for their 10th straight win, 10-5 over the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday. Miranda added his third hit for another RBI in a four-run ninth that put it away for the Twins, whose winning streak is their longest since June 2008 and the longest in the major leagues this season. Willi Castro added an RBI single to cap a three-hit day that included a double and triple. Alex Kirilloff hit a solo shot off Chicago starter Chris Flexen. Ryan Jeffers knocked in two runs with a double for Minnesota, which has beaten Chicago in eight straight dating to last season. Minnesota’s Bailey Ober (3-1) scuffled to the win, despite allowing four runs on six hits in six innings. Twins center fielder Byron Buxton left the game in the second inning with right knee soreness after an unsuccessful attempt to steal second base. Buxton singled leading off the inning, didn’t slide and was thrown out by Lee. Buxton walked off the field slowly and was replaced in the bottom half by Castro, who moved from third base. RHP Chris Paddack (2-1, 5.88 ERA) starts Friday against Boston in Minneapolis.

TIMBERWOLVES-FINCH

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Timberwolves are planning for coach Chris Finch to be with them in Denver to begin their Western Conference semifinal series following his knee surgery — and considering seating configurations that would allow him to safely be on the bench during games. Finch’s procedure to repair a ruptured patellar tendon in his right knee Wednesday went well, according to assistant coach Micah Nori, who has temporarily taken the lead in Finch’s absence. Finch directed the initiation of the strategy for the Nuggets earlier this week before going into surgery. The team will fly Thursday night to Denver ahead of Saturday’s Game 1. Provided his recovery is on track, Finch would likely travel separately to allow more healing time, Nori said. In the NBA, the bench is cramped with reserve players and large coaching and training staffs with high-priced floor seats surrounding them to be right on top of the action. It will be a challenge to create enough space for Finch to keep his leg extended, and to be out of harm’s way in case another loose-ball chase or player collision comes too close for comfort. The Timberwolves have discussed relocating head athletic trainer Gregg Farnam’s seat to give Finch room. If they can’t make that setup work, Finch would likely join the team in the locker room for pregame and halftime meetings and watch the action from above in a suite.

TIMBERWOLVES-HONOR

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota Timberwolves point guard Mike Conley received the NBA Teammate of the Year award for a second time on Wednesday. The finalists were selected by a panel of league executives, and current NBA players voted on the winner. Brooklyn’s Mikal Bridges finished second, followed by New York’s Jalen Brunson, Indiana’s T.J. McConnell and Cleveland’s Georges Niang. The award, given annually for selfless play, on-court and off-court leadership and commitment and dedication to the team, is named after Maurice Stokes and Jack Twyman, friends who played together on the Cincinnati Royals. Stokes was paralyzed after an on-court injury in 1958, and Twyman became his legal guardian and supported Stokes for the rest of his life until his death in 1970. Conley, who’s in his 17th year in the league, first won the award with Memphis in the 2018-19 season. He has also won the NBA Sportsmanship Award a record four times. The only other Timberwolves player to win the teammate award previously was Jamal Crawford for the 2017-18 season. Jrue Holiday, a three-time winner, is the only other player in the league to win the award multiple times. The Timberwolves face defending champion Denver in Game 1 of their Western Conference semifinal series on Saturday.

MINOT STATE SOFTBALL-HONORS

MINOT, N.D. (MSU) – With the regular season in the books and postseason play set to begin, the NSIC announced its All-Conference and All-Defensive Softball Teams on Tuesday and a trio of Minot State Beavers were honored by the league’s coaches. Senior shortstop Brooklyn Morrison, senior pitcher and designated player Gabi Dawyduk, and sophomore catcher Anna LaCount all were honored as they were named to the All-NSIC team for their play this spring.

Morrison was a 1st Team All-NSIC selection as voted on by the league’s coaches, while Dawyduk and LaCount both were voted 2nd Team All-NSIC players. The honor is the first time each has been named to the All-NSIC Team. Morrison led the Beavers with a .391 batting average and 3 home runs in 36 games this season. She also had 10 doubles, 2 triples, 14 RBIs, and 7 stolen bases on offense. Also anchoring the Beaver defense, she had a .960 fielding percentage with 58 putouts and 110 assists in 175 chances.

LaCount was next behind Morrison with her .378 batting average in 32 games as she added 13 doubles, a triple, 22 RBIs, and 2 stolen bases. Defensively she had 69 putouts and 15 assists in 86 chances, and as a catcher she threw out 5 base-stealers.

Dawyduk hit .307 for the Beavers with nine doubles, a home run, 22 RBIs as well, which was second most on the team, and a stolen base. Defensively she had 1 putout and 39 assists in 41 chances. In the circle, the Beaver senior led Minot State’s pitching staff with her 2.23 ERA and nine wins in 18 appearances while opponents hit a low of .252 against the Minot State senior who struck out 34 batters.

Morrison, LaCount, Dawyduk, and the rest of the Beaver softball team (22-18 overall) hit the diamond today to begin postseason play, taking on Northern State (25-23) in the first round of the NSIC Tournament in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.

TWINS-WHITE SOX

CHICAGO (AP) — Max Kepler drove in the tiebreaking run in the ninth inning for the second straight game, this time with a sacrifice fly, and the Minnesota Twins won their ninth in a row, 6-5 over the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday night. The Twins extended their longest win streak since a 10-game run in June 2008. They also won their seventh in a row against the White Sox and put themselves in position to sweep Chicago again after taking four games at Target Field last week. Minnesota’s Simeon Woods Richardson went 3 2/3 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) and seven hits. The 23-year-old right-hander threw 81 pitches in his fourth career start and third this season. Jhoan Duran pitched around a leadoff single by Tommy Pham in the bottom half and picked up the save after missing the Twins’ first 28 games because of a strained right oblique muscle. Caleb Thielbar (1-1) recorded the final two outs in the eighth. The White Sox are a major league-worst 6-24 overall and 2-17 against the AL Central.

UP NEXT
The three-game series wraps up with RHP Bailey Ober (2-1, 4.21 ERA) pitching for Minnesota and RHP Chris Flexen (1-3, 5.11) getting the ball for Chicago. Ober has a 1.48 ERA in four starts since getting pounded in a loss at Kansas City on March 31. Flexen threw five scoreless innings in a win over Tampa Bay last week.

WOLVES-FINCH SURGERY

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Timberwolves will enter their second round playoff series against defending champion Denver with an unsettled bench — coach Chris Finch will be recovering from knee surgery. Finch, who was hurt in a sideline collision with Timberwolves point guard Mike Conley, will have his ruptured right patellar tendon repaired today, according to a person with knowledge of the plan. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Tuesday because the team had not yet made the details public. ESPN first reported the news. Conley was dribbling up the court near the boundary when Suns star Devin Booker bumped into him, sending him hurtling toward the coach. Conley tried to brace their fall, but the damage was already done by the impact. Finch immediately grimaced and grabbed his knee in pain. The surgery will leave Finch with only three days of recovery before Game 1 in Denver, and this type of procedure typically requires the leg to be immobilized for more time than that. He’ll need crutches for awhile, too. The cramped space on an NBA sideline makes it difficult to envision Finch being able to be on the bench for the beginning of the series. Assistant coach Micah Nori took the lead after Finch hobbled off late in the Game 4 win at Phoenix that completed the first round sweep. Nori also coached the team March 8 at Cleveland when Finch was ill. Filling any voids will be a team effort from a staff that has developed a strong sense of chemistry in the short time it’s been together.
