GRAND FORKS, N.D. (UND) – University of North Dakota head hockey coach Brad Berry announced on Saturday morning that defenseman Caleb MacDonald has transferred to the program for his final three years of eligibility beginning in 2024-25. MacDonald joins UND after a freshman season with Alaska, skating in 31 games and pacing all rookie skaters with 14 points on four goals and 10 helpers. The Cambridge, Ontario, native spent time on both the power play and penalty kill for the Nanooks, helping the squad finish with a winning record. He was particularly good against NCHC foes, potting five points (2G, 3A) in five games against North Dakota, Denver and St. Cloud State. He notched his first multi-goal game as a collegiate player at Ralph Engelstad Arena, striking for two goals and adding an assist for three points, while also notching his first-collegiate point in a 5-2 win at St. Cloud State. On the defensive end, MacDonald finished tied for third on the team with 28 blocked shots, including a career-high five against North Dakota, while also sitting second on the squad with a plus-13 rating. The blueliner played his junior career with Whitecourt in the AJHL, where he shared the ice with current UND defenseman Tanner Komzak. MacDonald is expected to pursue an undergraduate degree in business.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Max Kepler had two hits and three RBIs in his return from the injured list and the Minnesota Twins beat the Chicago White Sox 7-0 on Monday night. Chris Paddack struck out 10 in seven innings to win as a starter for the first time in nearly two years. Edouard Julien homered among his three hits for Minnesota. Blanked for the eighth time this season and once in each series, Chicago has lost 10 of 11. The White Sox fell to 3-19, the worst record in the majors. Nicky Lopez and Danny Mendick each had two hits, and Gavin Sheets and manager Pedro Grifol were ejected for arguing balls and strikes in the eighth inning. Minnesota matched a season-high with 11 hits and tied its second-most runs in a game this season. Paddack (1-1) scattered just six hits and walked none for his first win as a starter since May 2, 2022. The right-hander underwent his second Tommy John surgery shortly thereafter and did not return until late last season, getting a win in relief Sept. 30. Making his second career start, Chicago’s Jonathan Cannon (0-1) allowed nine hits and six earned runs in 3 2-3 innings.

MINNESOTA WILD
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — John Hynes of the Minnesota Wild has been named the coach of the 2024 U.S. men’s national team for next month’s IIHF men’s world championship in Czechia. USA Hockey announced the appointment on Friday for the event that will take place from May 10-26. The games will be played in Prague and Ostrava. Hynes, who also coached the national team in 2016 and ’19, finished his first season as coach of the NHL’s Minnesota Wild this week, missing the playoffs. The 49-year-old has also been a head coach for the Nashville Predators and New Jersey Devils, and for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in the AHL. The Warwick, Rhode Island, native spent six seasons (2003-09) as a head coach for USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program. Hynes played at Boston University and competed in four NCAA Frozen Fours, winning the championship in 1995.
