COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (UND) – Sophomore forward Owen McLaughlin and senior goaltender Ludvig Persson both earned weekly NCHC honors, as announced by the league office on Monday afternoon. McLaughlin was named the NCHC Forward of the Week for the first time while Persson gloved the NCHC Goaltender of the Week award for the fourth time this season.
McLaughlin tallied three points to help North Dakota lock up the Penrose Cup with a sweep of then-No. 12 Western Michigan. The Philadelphia Flyers draft pick scored two goals in the series to tie for the NCHC goal-scoring lead on the weekend, tallying one each night. In Friday’s opener, McLaughlin notched the game’s opening goal only 1:50 into the contest in an eventual 5-3 victory. A night later, he tallied two points in a 3-0 shutout to clinch the NCHC regular season title. McLaughlin handed out the primary assist on UND’s second goal, then sealed the win with a breakaway goal midway through the third period. The Spring City, Pa., native finished the weekend with two goals, an assist, a +2 plus/minus and three shots on goal. In doing so, he stretched his point streak to four games, with three goals and two assists in that span. The sophomore is tied for second on the team with 34 points (12g/22a) in 33 games, with his 22 assists also second on UND.
Persson backstopped North Dakota to a sweep of then-No. 12 Western Michigan, including shining on Saturday’s Senior Night with a shutout to secure the Penrose Cup. The Swede made more than 30 saves both nights, starting with 34 stops in Friday’s 5-3 victory. The next night, in the final regular-season home game, Persson turned aside all 35 shots he faced, including 13 in the final frame, in a 3-0 whitewash for his fifth shutout of the season and second in four games. The 35 saves marked a season high and his 10th career shutout, while earning him the game’s first star honors. The senior finished the sweep with 69 total saves and a .958 save percentage, both of which led the NCHC on the weekend. He also compiled a 1.50 goals-against average, which was second in the NCHC, in the two wins. Persson is now second nationally with five shutouts on the year and fourth in the NCAA with 21 wins, posting a 21-8-2 record in net. On the season, he now has a .908 save percentage and a 2.44 GAA, both ranking in the top three in the NCHC.
No. 3 North Dakota heads to Baxter Arena to close the regular season against No. 16/17 Omaha beginning on Friday night at 7:07 p.m.

TIMBERWOLVES-TRAILBLAZERS
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Rudy Gobert had 25 points and 16 rebounds for his 43rd double-double of the season, Michael Conley added 19 points and seven assists, and the Minnesota Timberwolves completed a four-game season sweep of Portland, beating the Trail Blazers 119-114 Monday night. With the win, Minnesota (43-19) moved into a tie for first place in the Western Conference with Oklahoma City. The Timberwolves are an NBA-best 30-9 against Western Conference opponents, 20-5 against teams with a less than .500 record and 23-8 at Target Center, for the league’s fifth-best home record. Karl-Anthony Towns scored 14 points, Anthony Edwards had 13, and Naz Reid added 12 points on 4-for-4 shooting from 3-point distance for Minnesota, which was playing its fifth game in seven nights and completed a seven-game homestand with a 4-3 record. Anfernee Simons had 34 points, 14 assists and five rebounds, and Duop Reath shot 5 for 6 from long distance and scored 26 points for Portland, which was playing its third game in four nights.

VIKINGS-MATTISON RELEASED
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Vikings released running back Alexander Mattison on Monday, with the club continuing to seek solutions to a lagging rushing attack. Mattison was coming off an unremarkable first season as the primary ball carrier and lost the starting job to Ty Chandler for the last four games. Mattison rushed for a career-high 700 yards and had three receiving touchdowns, but a lack of explosiveness at the line minimized his impact. The move will clear $3.35 million from Minnesota’s salary cap and leave just $1.25 million in dead money from the two-year, $7 million contract he signed prior to last season. The Vikings cut four-time Pro Bowl pick Dalvin Cook for cap savings last year and turned the backfield over to Mattison, one of the most popular and respected players in the locker room. Mattison had 25 attempts that went for negative yardage, according to Sportradar data, tied for the ninth most in the NFL, and his average of 3.86 yards per carry ranked 34th among running backs in the league with 100 or more attempts. The 2019 third-round draft pick out of Boise State had only one rush that gained 20 or more yards. Mattison was charged with seven dropped passes, per Sportradar, and also lost a critical fumble in a 21-20 defeat at Denver late in the third quarter with the Vikings leading by nine points and in field-goal range with a fresh set of downs. Chandler had 123 touches for 620 yards from scrimmage last season and will figure heavily into the game plan for 2024, but the Vikings will likely look hard at their options in free agency with numerous accomplished players on the market at the league’s most undervalued skill position. The draft will be another place to assess their options for upgrading the backfield. The Vikings ranked 29th in the NFL in rushing yards per game and 24th in rushing yards per attempt.
