USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service has released the North Dakota 2018 Annual Crop Production Summary....

    FARGO, N.D. - USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service has released the North Dakota 2018 Annual Crop Production Summary.

    Corn for grain production in North Dakota based on year-end surveys is estimated at 448 million bushels, down slightly from 2017. Yield of 153 bushels per acre is up 14 bushels from last year. Farmers harvested 2.93 million acres of corn for grain down 9 percent from 2017. Corn for silage production totaled 2.55 million tons, up 59 percent from 2017. Yield, at 15.0 tons per acre, is up 5.0 tons per acre from a year earlier. Area for harvest, at 170,000 acres is up 6 percent from 2017. Total acreage planted for all purposes is 3.15 million acres, down 8 percent from last year.

    Soybean production for 2018 totaled 244 million bushels, up slightly from 2017. Yield, at 35.5 bushels per acre, is up 1.0 bushel from a year earlier. Area for harvest, at 6.86 million acres, is down 3 percent 2017. Total acreage planted is 6.90 million acres, down 3 percent from last year.

    Fall potato production is 23.4 million cwt, down 4 percent from 2017. Yield, at 320 cwt per acre, is down 10 cwt from a year earlier. Area harvested, at 73,000 acres, is down 1,000 acres from 2017. Total acreage planted is 74,500, down 500 acres from last year.

    Oil sunflower production in 2018 is 665 million pounds, up 6 percent from last year. Record yield, at 1,750 pounds per acre, is up 100 pounds from a year earlier. Area harvested, at 380,000 acres, is down slightly from 2017. Total acreage planted is 395,000 acres, unchanged from last year. Non-oil sunflower production of 74.4 million pounds is down 2 percent from last year. Record yield, at 1,860 pounds per acre, is up 60 pounds from a year earlier. Area harvested, at a record low of 40,000 acres, is down 2,000 from 2017. Total acreage planted is at a record low of 41,000 acres, down 5 percent from last year.

    Canola production is estimated at a record high of 3.10 billion pounds, up 24 percent from last year. Record yield of 1,960 pounds per acre is up 360 pounds from a year earlier. Area harvested, at a record high 1.58 million acres, is up 20,000 from 2017. Total acreage planted is a record high 1.59 million acres, unchanged from last year.

    Flaxseed production is estimated at 3.79 million bushels, up 10 percent from 2017. Record yield per harvested acre is estimated at 24.0 bushels, up 9.0 bushels from last year. Acres harvested are estimated at 158,000, down from 229,000 a year ago. Total acreage planted is 165,000 acres, down 33 percent from last year.

    Dry edible bean production of 10.8 million cwt is down 13 percent from a year ago. Yield, at 1,760 pounds per acre, is down 50.0 pounds from a year earlier. Area harvested, at 615,000 acres, is down 10 percent from 2017. Total acreage planted is 635,000 acres, down 10 percent from last year.

    Dry edible pea production is estimated at 8.03 million cwt, up 9 percent from 2017. Yield is estimated at 2,200 pounds per acre, up 400 pounds from last year. Acres harvested are estimated at 365,000, down 11 percent from a year ago. Total acreage planted is 375,000 acres, down 12 percent from last year.
Lentil production is estimated at 2.40 million cwt, up 10 percent from the previous year. Yield is estimated at 1,370 pounds per acre, up 500 pounds from last year. Acres harvested are estimated at 175,000, down 30 percent from 2017. Total acreage planted is 185,000 acres, down 31 percent from last year.

    Sugarbeet production is estimated at 5.73 million tons, down 11 percent from last year. Yield is estimated at 28.8 tons per acre, down 1.6 tons from the previous year. Acres harvested are estimated at 199,000 acres, down 6 percent from the previous year. Total acreage planted is 202,000 acres, down 12,000 acres from last year.

    Safflower production is estimated at 10.5 million pounds, up 123 percent from last year. Yield is estimated at 1,100 pounds per acre, up 200 pounds from last year. Acres harvested are estimated at 9,500, up 83 percent from a year ago. Total acreage planted is 10,000 acres, up 41 percent from last year.

    Alfalfa hay production, at 2.50 million tons, is up 34 percent from a year earlier. The average yield, at 1.70 tons per acre, is up 0.35 tons per acre from 2017. Area harvested for dry hay, at 1.47 million acres, is up 7 percent from 2017. Seedings of alfalfa during 2018 totaled 95,000 acres, down 35,000 acres from the year earlier. All other hay production, at 1.92 million tons, is up 23 percent. Average yield, at 1.60 tons per acre, is up 0.30 ton per acre from last year. Area harvested at 1.20 million acres, is unchanged from 2017.

    For 2019 winter wheat seeded area is estimated at 110,000 acres, up from last year's seeded area of 85,000 acre.

    NORTH DAKOTA DECEMBER 1, 2018 GRAIN AND HAY STOCKS

    FARGO, N.D. - North Dakota all wheat stored in all positions in North
Dakota on December 1, 2018 totaled 279 million bushels, up 34 percent from a year ago, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. On-farm stocks of 188 million bushels are up 36 percent from 2017, and off-farm stocks of 91.5 million bushels, are up 30 percent from last year.

    Durum wheat stored in all positions totaled 35.5 million bushels, up 43 percent from a year ago.

    Barley stored in all positions totaled 34.7 million bushels, down 15 percent from 2017. On-farm stocks are 17.0 million bushels, down 23 percent from last year, while off-farm stocks, at 17.7 million bushels, are down 7 percent from last year.

    Corn stocks totaled 331 million bushels, down 21 percent from 2017. Of the total, 245 million bushels are stored on farms, down 18 percent from a year ago. Off-farm stocks, at 86.4 million bushels, are down 27 percent from last year.

    Soybeans stored in all positions totaled 174 million bushels, up 35 percent from last year. Onfarm stocks of 105 million bushels are up 54 percent from a year ago, while off-farm stocks, at 68.5 million bushels, are up 12 percent from 2017.

    Oats stocks stored on-farm, at 3.25 million bushels, are up 20 percent from a year ago.

    Hay stocks on North Dakota farms totaled 4.00 million tons on December 1, 2018, up 23 percent from a year earlier.

    Grain storage capacity in North Dakota totaled 1.39 billion bushels, up 35.0 million bushels from December 1, 2017. Total grain storage capacity is comprised of 915 million bushels of onfarm storage, up 15.0 million from last year, and 475 million bushels of off-farm storage, up 20.0 million from 2017.
