TODAY'S THOUGHT

The Advent season narrows our gaze toward the King in a manger who came to be our King on the cross. The only King who ever established His kingdom, not by exerting power, but by giving it up. Not by eradicating His enemies, but by dying for them.

ST. LOUIS (AP) - The St. Louis Cardinals have agreed to a one-year deal with Adam Wainwright, bringing the veteran right-hander back to the only major league team he has ever pitched for. The 37-year-old Wainwright has been with St. Louis since making his big league debut in 2005. Wainwright is fifth on the team's career list with 148 wins and second with 1,623 strikeouts. He made just eight starts this season because of hamstring and elbow problems, going 2-4 with a 4.46 ERA.

UNDATED (AP) - Steve Kerr and Jay Wright have been chosen as assistant coaches for the U.S. national basketball team, putting the coaches of the NBA and NCAA championship teams on Gregg Popovich's staff. USA Basketball says Nate McMillan will be the other assistant. The trio of coaches will work with Popovich in the 2019 Basketball World Cup and 2020 Olympics, assuming the Americans qualify for both events.

Kerr has led Golden State to two straight and three of the last four NBA championships. Wright guided Villanova to the 2016 and 2018 NCAA titles. McMillan worked on Mike Krzyzewski's staff from 2006-12, when the Americans won two Olympic gold medals and the 2010 world championship.
