TODAY'S THOUGHT

The challenge for believers is to understand when our technology habits are leading us into greater anxiety, fear, anger, and pride and be willing to course correct as necessary....to harness these tools rather than allow them to master us.

     NFL-REDSKINS-INJURIES

WASHINGTON (AP) - Both starting guards for the Washington Redskins, Brandon Scherff and Shawn Lauvao, will have season-ending surgery, as will wide receiver Paul Richardson. Coach Jay Gruden announced today that Scherff, a Pro Bowl right guard, tore a pectoral muscle, while Lauvao, a left guard, tore the ACL in his left knee during Washington's 38-14 loss to the visiting Atlanta Falcons. That setback Sunday ended a three-game winning streak for the NFC East-leading Redskins.

     NFL-CHARGERS-KICKERS

COSTA MESA, Calif. (AP) - The Los Angeles Chargers have released kicker Caleb Sturgis and promoted Michael Badgley from the practice squad. Sturgis' release today came after he missed two extra points and a field goal in Sunday's 25-17 win over Seattle. The six-year veteran is the first kicker since the Raiders' Jim Breech in 1979 to miss a PAT and field goal in three straight games. Sturgis was 9 of 15 this season on extra points and 9 of 13 on field goals. He had missed only four extra points coming into the season since attempts were moved back in 2015.

    MLB-HALL OF FAME

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. (AP) - Late New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, former managers Lou Piniella, Davey Johnson and Charlie Manuel, and six players headed by Lee Smith are on the 10-man ballot for the baseball Hall of Fame's Today's Game Era committee to consider next month.

Harold Baines, Albert Belle, Will Clark, Orel Hershiser and Joe Carter also are on the ballot for the 16-man committee, which meets Dec. 9 at the winter meetings in Las Vegas. The committee considers candidates from 1998 to the present, and a candidate needs at least 75 percent of the vote to be elected.

Any candidate picked will be inducted July 21 along with any players elected by the Baseball Writers' Association of America in a vote announced Jan. 22. Mariano Rivera and the late Roy Halladay join a ballot with top returnees Edgar Martinez and Mike Mussina.

UNDATED (AP) - Novak Djokovic is back at No. 1 in the ATP rankings after a two-year absence - and the first man in nearly two decades to rise to the top spot after being outside the top 20 in the same season. Djokovic moved up from No. 2 to overtake Rafael Nadal today.

When the 31-year-old from Serbia fell to No. 22 in May after beginning the year with a 6-6 record while recovering from surgery on his right elbow, it was his lowest ranking since he was 22nd in 2006 as a teenager.

Djokovic has gone 43-5 since, including Grand Slam titles at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open.

Marat Safin went from No. 38 to No. 1 in 2000.

NEW YORK (AP) - The NHL has suspended Winnipeg Jets forward Brendan Lemieux for two games for an illegal check to the head of Florida Panthers forward Vincent Trocheck.

The incident occurred in the second period of the Panthers' 4-2 win over the Jets on Friday in Helsinki, Finland. Lemieux skated by Trocheck and hit him in the head after the Panthers forward passed the puck into the Jets' zone.

Lemieux, who fought with the Panthers' MacKenzie Weegar in front of the Jets goal after the play, was assessed a match penalty for an illegal check to the head.

Lemieux will forfeit $9,023.30 in salary. He will be eligible to return when the Jets host Washington on Nov. 14.
